Chapter 6 - A Signature from Ten Years Ago

Nora arrived after dark with a laptop bag, a raincoat, and the exhausted look of someone who had driven four hours without stopping.
She hugged Adrian first, surprising them both. Then she found Lucy and Ben sitting with Elena in the kitchen, eating grilled cheese sandwiches as if each bite needed permission.
“Your mother made those when we were little,” Nora told them. “She burned the edges every time.”
Ben managed a tiny smile.
In the study, Adrian showed Nora the messages. She read them twice.
“What did you sign ten years ago?” he asked.
Nora closed her eyes. “A settlement agreement. Dad's business had a land dispute with the Alvarezes. He told me a family was trying to exploit him. I was twenty-four and clerking for the firm. I notarized a signature.”
“Whose?”
“Daniel Alvarez. Lucy and Ben's father.”
“He died nine years ago,” Adrian said, remembering an old newspaper story about a warehouse accident.
“That's the problem.” Nora unfolded a copy of the deed she'd received. “The settlement date is four months after his death.”
Adrian stared at her. “You notarized a dead man's signature?”
“I thought I was witnessing a routine corporate filing. Dad handed me the identification page separately. I was careless. I should have checked.”
“Did Mom know?”
“She found out last year. She said the land never belonged to us and she was trying to return it.”
Adrian sank into his chair. Their father had died believing his empire was secure. But buried inside its foundation might be a forged transfer that had cost another family everything.
“What does Celeste want?” he asked.
“Maybe to keep the land.”
“No. Keene doesn't threaten us over a cottage unless there's something bigger.”
Nora opened an online property map. A proposed private development ran straight through the Alvarez parcel. The new access road would increase the value of Blackthorn land by millions.

Then Nora pointed to a document stamped with a date from the previous week.
“Adrian. Celeste has already signed an agreement to sell it.”
