Chapter 10 - The Maid on the Screen

"Before we celebrate," Graham said into the microphone, "we have to address an unfortunate attempt to sabotage tonight's event."
My soaked clothes had mostly stopped dripping, but I could feel every eye travel down my stained sleeves.
On the giant screen appeared a photograph of me standing beside the fountain. The frame had been cropped to exclude Vivian. Without the shove, it looked as though I'd climbed into the water on purpose.
"A temporary employee," Graham continued, "has made false accusations about our family and tried to remove an item from our charitable collection."
A few guests murmured. Most went quiet.
Vivian stood near the stage with the gracious expression of someone accepting an award for cruelty.
"This is what happens when kindness is mistaken for weakness," she said into a second microphone. "We gave that woman a job."
"You gave me a mop," I called. "There's a difference."
A ripple went through the ballroom.
Graham gripped the podium. "Escort her out."
"Show the whole video," I said.
"We don't owe you a public hearing."
"Then stop giving a public speech about me."
Luis moved toward the stage but didn't touch me. Kayla stepped out of the servers' line. Then Ana joined her. Behind them came three housekeepers and a dishwasher. They stood with me, still in their work clothes, facing a sea of tuxedos and diamonds.
Graham tried to laugh. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm afraid our staff has been misled."
Dana walked in through the main entrance with a sealed document in her hand. She was followed by two directors and an independent auditor, all of whom had been waiting for the proper notices to take effect.
"Graham Vale," Dana said, her voice carrying without a microphone, "your authority to bind this hotel to a new management agreement is formally disputed. A board vote is underway."
Vivian scowled. "Who invited you?"
Dana looked at me.
"The woman who controls sixty-three percent of the company that owns this hotel."
Silence fell.

Then Graham said the one thing I hadn't expected.
"Nora Bennett is not the controlling owner. Because she sold those shares this morning."
