Chapter 13 - The Scholarship Threat

"They can't take it away over a video," I said.
Eli stared at the message. "The foundation board can change its awards. My sister's at nursing school. She's got one semester left."
His hands shook. He tried to hide them in his jacket pockets.
"What's her name?" I asked.
"Maddie."
"Does Maddie know what happened tonight?"
"Not yet."
"Then call her before they do. Tell her the truth. Let her choose what she wants you to do with the recording."
He frowned. "You're telling me to put this on her?"
"I'm telling you not to carry their threat alone."
He made the call. I turned away to give him privacy, but I heard him say, "I'm sorry," and then, after a long silence, "Are you sure?"
When he hung up, his face had changed.
"Maddie said she'd rather lose a scholarship than let somebody buy my silence."
"Smart woman."
"She also said if they're using her money to threaten people, maybe she doesn't want it from them."
Dana recorded the threatening number, preserved a screenshot, and notified the foundation's independent trustees. One trustee called immediately, furious. Another refused to speak without his attorney. That told me more than an apology would have.
Back in the ballroom, Graham announced an "unfortunate misunderstanding" and invited guests to return to their tables. He was trying to restore the evening before anyone noticed how much power he'd lost.
I stepped onto the edge of the stage. "Mr. Vale, I'm asking you again. Show the whole fountain recording."
"There isn't one. The camera failed."
"Then let's look at the other angle."
Eli connected his original file to the event technician's laptop while Luis observed. The technician verified the timestamp before displaying it. On the screen Vivian approached, looked around, and shoved me backward into the water.
The splash filled the speakers. Then came her clear, delighted laugh.
Nobody applauded this time.
Vivian's face drained. "That footage was taken without my permission!"
A guest near the front stood up. "I watched you do it. I should've helped her."
I looked at him. "Yes. You should have."

Then the screen changed without anyone touching the controls.
A warning appeared from hotel maintenance: BASEMENT FIRE EXIT OBSTRUCTED. IMMEDIATE INSPECTION REQUIRED.
