Chapter 19 - The Price of Telling

The city inspector was arrested before lunch.
The video showed him accepting cash and agreeing to overlook structural problems at the youth center. It also showed Carlo laughing about how easy it was to frighten people once they had something to lose.
The case widened fast.
Carlo agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration on some charges, but kidnapping Emma and participating in the poisoning attempt remained serious enough that no deal could erase them. Enzo faced conspiracy, kidnapping, witness intimidation, and charges tied to Alessandro Sr.’s death investigation.
Pierce surrendered his medical license.
Isabella pleaded guilty to lesser charges tied to drugging Alessandro and obstruction. Her cooperation helped expose the rest, but it did not make breakfast disappear.
Before sentencing, she asked Alessandro to meet once.
He almost refused.
Then he remembered how often refusal had been his way of avoiding pain.
They met in a courthouse conference room.
Isabella looked thinner. No makeup. No expensive clothes. No performance left.
“I loved you,” she said.
Alessandro did not answer.
“That’s the worst part,” she continued. “I loved you and still found a way to justify betraying you.”
“You were protecting Luca.”
“I was protecting myself from feeling helpless.”
The honesty hurt more than excuses would have.
“Why Rosie?” he asked.
“I heard Emma crying after I threatened her. I hated myself. I had the storage key in my pocket. I put it in the doll before I threw her into the fountain because I knew Emma would get Rosie back no matter what.”
“You terrified a child and used her as a courier.”
“Yes.”
He stood.
“I forgive none of that.”
“I didn’t ask you to.”
At the door, Alessandro stopped.
“What happens to Luca?”
“He’s in treatment. He hates me.”
“Maybe let him.”
She nodded, crying quietly.
Outside, reporters waited.
Alessandro walked past them without speaking.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Maria:
Emma wants to know if you’re eating breakfast tomorrow.
He typed back:
Only if she inspects the butter.
Three dots appeared.
Then Maria replied:
She says her fee is pancakes.
May you like
Alessandro smiled.
For the first time in weeks, the next morning sounded possible.
