Chapter 1 - The Push

The wheelchair went over the edge, and Claire Bennett knew her baby was going into the pool with her.

“No!” she screamed.

The front wheels hit nothing. Her stomach lifted. For one impossible second, the blue water looked like a sheet of glass waiting to break. Then the chair flipped, the pool swallowed her, and the screaming stopped.

Cold water slammed into Claire's face. Her light-blue dress billowed around her swollen belly. The wheelchair struck the bottom with a metallic crack, dragging her down by the lap belt she had forgotten to unfasten.

Thirty-four weeks pregnant. One fractured ankle. No way to stand.

She clawed at the buckle. It wouldn't move.

Above her, through rippling blue, she saw a woman in a burgundy gown standing at the edge. Sloane Price watched with one hand resting on her hip, her long blonde hair bright in the sunset.

Inside, wedding music played above the guests' laughter. Sloane had offered to take Claire outside for air. Her hands on the wheelchair had seemed gentle.

Minutes earlier, Sloane had leaned close enough for Claire to smell her expensive perfume.

“You should've left the accounts alone,” she'd whispered.

Claire had tried to turn. “Ethan needs to see what you did.”

“He signed the papers, sweetheart.” Sloane's smile hadn't reached her eyes. “He'll never believe you over me.”

Then the push.

Now Claire's lungs burned. She pulled the buckle until a nail tore. A bubble slipped from her mouth. She thought of the tiny pink socks folded inside the nursery dresser, and of Ethan laughing last night when the baby kicked against his hand.

Please. Just let her live.

On the terrace, footsteps slapped against stone. A woman shouted, “Oh my God!”

Claire couldn't tell who it was. Darkness gathered at the edges of her vision. She stopped fighting the strap and wrapped both arms around her belly, as if that could protect the little girl inside.

A shadow broke the water above her.

Someone was coming down fast.

But Claire's hand slipped from the buckle just as the last of her air escaped.
