Chapter 10 - The Woman They Wanted on Camera

I replayed the clip three times. The camera angle was high, as if someone had recorded it from a neighboring window. No date appeared on the file.
Daniel gripped the counter. “They used Owen.”
“Not yet,” Helen said sharply. “The video suggests intent to manipulate perception. We need to verify when it was recorded and who made it.”
I was shaking with anger. “She threw soup at me while I held him. In front of everybody.”
“Then write down exactly what you saw,” Helen said. “Who stood where, what she held, what she said. Ask witnesses separately, without coaching them.”
We spent the afternoon doing just that. Uncle Frank said he saw Camille push the bowl forward. Aunt Denise remembered hearing Camille say I had ruined the holiday. Walter claimed nothing had happened beyond a careless movement.
Then a voicemail arrived from my mother-in-law, Elise. She had skipped Christmas dinner because she was recovering from a minor procedure.
“Nora, call me before you believe anything Walter tells you,” she said. Her voice broke. “I should have spoken months ago.”
Elise came to our house carrying a small canvas bag. She looked exhausted.
“Camille told me there was a plan to persuade Daniel to sign over his shares in the family business,” she said. “She said you were the obstacle.”
Daniel stared at her. “Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Walter said the business was collapsing. He said if we frightened you, nobody would save it.”
“What business?” I asked.
“Northline Properties. Hartwell's largest outside investor is a Northline subsidiary.”
The pieces shifted. The same family stood on both sides of the shelter sale. Borrowed money kept the trust afloat on paper while a connected developer waited to buy the building.
Elise opened her bag and pulled out a flash drive.
“I copied Walter's meeting calendar,” she said. “There are appointments with Peter going back two years.”

Then she looked at her son.
“And Daniel, there's one meeting you attended that you haven't told Nora about.”
