Chapter 17 - The Boardroom Without a Throne

Northline's emergency board meeting was held in a glass conference room overlooking downtown. Ruth attended as a major shareholder. Daniel came with counsel. I was there because the disputed loan involved my home and identity.
Walter sat at the head of the table, as he always had. Camille sat beside her attorney. Peter's seat was empty.
“Before we begin,” Walter said, “I will not accept an ambush by my own family.”
Ruth placed Sam's letter on the table. “Then perhaps you should have told the truth before anyone needed to confront you.”
A board member asked why shelter funds had moved into a development account. Walter insisted they were temporary investments. But the statements showed payments for design studies, consultant retainers, and purchase options benefiting Hartwell.
“Who authorized the use of restricted charitable money?” the chair asked.
Walter looked at Daniel. “My son signed the initial financing support.”
“I signed a review statement,” Daniel said. “Not an authorization to forge Nora's name or divert donations.”
Camille stared at the table. Her attorney whispered to her, and she nodded.
“I approved the invoice schedule Peter gave me,” she said. “I didn't verify the services. I should have.”
Walter slammed his palm against the wood. “You're going to destroy this family over bookkeeping?”
Ruth did not flinch. “You tried to sell a refuge for people who had nowhere else to go. You risked your son's home and your grandson's future. Stop calling consequences betrayal.”
The board voted to place Walter on administrative leave, initiate an independent forensic audit, and cooperate with the relevant authorities. The action was not a criminal verdict. It was a decision that he no longer had the trust of the people responsible for oversight.
As we left, Walter caught Daniel by the door.
“After everything I gave you,” he said.
Daniel looked at him for a long moment. “You taught me to protect our name. Nora taught me a name is worthless if you won't protect people.”
