Chapter 13 - A Father's Old Warning

Ruth read the letter in her husband's familiar, slightly crooked handwriting. Sam had worried that Walter treated community property like a family investment, even when the law and donors said otherwise.

“He was only twenty-seven then,” Ruth said. “I told Sam it was a phase.”

“What did Walter do?” Daniel asked.

“He tried to pledge a shelter-owned van as collateral for a private business loan. Sam stopped it.”

Daniel shut his eyes. His childhood heroes were falling apart one detail at a time.

Helen explained the covenant might support immediate legal relief, although its current effect had to be confirmed. She arranged for certified copies and a court filing. Mara started contacting families to assure them the building would remain open while they challenged the notice.

Outside, a woman named Teresa approached me with her six-year-old daughter, June. June was wearing a purple knit hat that was too big for her.

“Are they really closing us down?” Teresa asked.

“We're fighting that,” I said. “No one should have given you a deadline without answers.”

Teresa glanced at Owen in his stroller. “You understand. You have a baby.”

I nodded. That was all I could manage.

At home, Daniel received a letter from Northline's lawyer. He had been suspended from his executive role pending an internal inquiry. The company also alleged that he had caused financial harm by challenging confidential transactions.

“They're trying to make you the person responsible,” I said.

“I know.”

He looked around our kitchen, at the cereal on the counter and Owen's socks in the drying rack. “What if I lose my job?”

“We'll make a plan. I can take more design contracts. But I won't let us keep that job by lying.”

He reached for my hand. I let him take it, but not because everything was fixed.

That evening, we learned that Peter Lang had left the state. His accountant's office was dark, his phone disconnected.

Then a bank investigator called Helen.

A request had been submitted that morning to transfer the disputed loan's proceeds overseas.

The authorization was signed in Daniel's name.
