Chapter 17 - The Same Rule

"A few weeks?" Mark repeated.
Robert raised both hands.
"Not now. Not without permission. We were only talking about the future."
"You met her twenty minutes ago."
"Mark," Sarah said.
"No. This is insane."
Lily's face closed.
Mark saw it but could not stop.
"You don't get to show up after twelve years and plan summers with my daughter."
Austin stood.
"Dad."
Mark kept going.
"Biology does not make you her family overnight."
The words hit the table.
Austin stared at him.
So did Lily.
Mark heard himself.
Biology does not make you her family.
He stopped.
Austin's voice was quiet.
"Say the other half."
Mark looked at him.
"What?"
"Say love can."
The diner noise seemed to fade.
Austin's jaw trembled.
"Say it counts when it's me too."
Mark sat back down.
Every defense left him.
"It counts when it's you too."
Austin did not look away.
Mark continued.
"You're my son. Not because I married your mom. Not because you call me Dad. Not because I want credit for six years."
His voice broke.
"You're my son because I chose to love you, and then I failed to act like that choice was permanent."
Austin blinked hard.
"I can't erase what I said."
"No."
"I can't erase the money, or the school, or the hundred smaller times I made you second."
"No."
"But I can stop doing it. Every day from now on."
Austin looked down.
Lily slid out of the booth and stood beside him.
"He's my brother."
Elaine nodded.
"Of course he is."
That simple answer made Austin look up.
No debate.
No explanation.
Of course he is.
Robert apologized for bringing up summer too soon.
Mark apologized for raising his voice.
They agreed on something slower: supervised visits, short at first, with Lily deciding what felt comfortable.
On the drive home, no one spoke for ten minutes.
Then Lily said, "I'm grounded, aren't I?"
Sarah laughed without humor.
"Extremely."
"Like how extreme?"
"Your phone and I are about to have a close relationship."
Austin grinned.
Mark glanced in the mirror.
"She's grounded. But she's not punished for wanting to know them."
Lily nodded.
"Fair."
At home, a large envelope waited in the mailbox.
The DNA lab logo was printed in the corner.
Lily stared at it.
Mark handed it to her.
"Your result. Your choice."
She opened it.
Her eyes moved to the bold line.
99.98% PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY.
Jason Cole was her biological father.
Lily looked at Mark.
"Are you still my dad?"
This time, he answered before fear could speak.
"Always."
Then Austin asked softly, "And me?"
May you like
Mark turned to him.
"Always."
