Chapter 5 - The Blue Key

By morning, Vanessa Sterling had turned the slap into a headline about herself.
A glossy statement called Naomi a violent employee who had disrupted a charity event. An attorney offered condolences for Elena Reyes's death and repeated the claim that her negligence had caused the fire. The hotel suspended Naomi without pay.
Tess read the statement aloud in her kitchen, then flung her phone onto the couch. "They wrote that with a straight face."
Naomi stared at her mother's photograph on the refrigerator. In it, Elena was laughing so hard her eyes were shut. She had always tucked spare keys into the lining of her winter coat because, as she said, a person could lose a purse but not the coat on her back.
"Tess," Naomi said, "do you still have that sewing kit?"
They drove to Naomi's apartment, watching for unfamiliar cars. In the closet, Naomi took down Elena's old blue coat. Beneath the left cuff, her fingers found a hard lump. She cut the stitches and shook out a tiny brass key with blue tape wrapped around its head.
A note fell out.
UNION STORAGE 14. IF THEY SAY I LIED, OPEN THIS.
Naomi sank onto the bed. "She knew."
"Your mom knew someone would blame her?"
"She was trying to tell me something before she died. I thought it was just the doors."
The union storage building stood behind an old print shop. A tired clerk checked the key against a ledger and led them to locker fourteen. Inside was a canvas grocery bag holding a cheap voice recorder, a spiral notebook, and a child's yellow mitten.
Naomi recognized the mitten. Danny Bell had dropped one the winter Elena taught him to make paper snowflakes.
She pressed play on the recorder. Static crackled, followed by her mother's voice.
"October twenty-third. Mr. Ward says the lock system is supposed to release when the alarm sounds. I tested the stairwell. It didn't. I told the manager. He said to keep my mouth shut until the investor walk-through."
A door slammed somewhere in the storage building.
Tess turned. "Did you hear that?"
May you like
Footsteps approached their aisle. Heavy. Deliberate.
Then a male voice said, "Miss Reyes, leave the bag where it is."
