Chapter 12 - Her Mother's Voice

Claire refused to run. "I've spent half my life letting them decide what's true," she said. "I'm done."

Mara persuaded her to stay with a friend instead of going home. June copied the documents and arranged an interview. Naomi barely listened. She was staring at Elena's recorder, wondering what else might be trapped inside its cheap plastic case.

They played every file from the beginning. Most were ordinary: a grocery list, a reminder about Danny's science project, Elena humming off-key while washing dishes. Naomi laughed once, unexpectedly, and then cried so hard she had to stop the recording.

"We can do this tomorrow," Tess said.

"No. I need to hear her."

The last file was labeled THURSDAY. Elena sounded tired.

"I met with Mr. Ward today. He says the alarms can't unlock Stairwell B when the remote hold is active. He told them. I told them. Mrs. Sterling says it's temporary until the new project launches. I asked her what happens if there's a fire. She said I was being dramatic."

Paper rustled. A man's voice could be heard faintly on a second recording, as if Elena had left the device running in her pocket.

"You need to give us the copy," the man said.

"It belongs to the tenants," Elena answered. "They have a right to know."

"You are making this much harder than it needs to be."

"Then open the doors."

The man sighed. "You don't understand what kind of people you're dealing with."

The recording ended. Naomi replayed it twice. "That's Weller, isn't it?"

June nodded. "It sounds like him. I'll have it checked."

There was one more file, recorded less than an hour before the fire. Elena's voice was softer now.

"Naomi, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry I kept the notes from you. I thought I could make them listen without putting you in danger. I was wrong. You always told me I tried to fix everybody's problems. Maybe I did. But those children need a door that opens. Every child does."

A pause. A shaky breath.

"I love you, baby. And I have one last copy where they won't think to look."

A click. Then seven words that made Naomi sit upright.

"Check the picture from my last birthday."
