Chapter 11 - The Blackout

Emergency lights came on seconds later, washing the ballroom in dim red.

People surged toward the exits.

Officer Brooks shouted for everyone to remain calm.

I heard Ethan call my name.

Then a hand grabbed my wrist.

I spun.

Rachel.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

“The kitchen. Now.”

She dragged me through the service door as the main room erupted with confused voices.

“What happened?”

“I saw Martin near the electrical panel.”

My chest tightened.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

We pushed through the kitchen.

A cook pointed toward the loading corridor.

“Man in a gray tie just went that way.”

Ethan caught up behind us.

We reached the loading dock in time to see a black sedan peel away.

Martin was in the passenger seat.

Vivian was driving.

Ethan stood frozen.

His own mother looked directly at him through the side window as the car turned.

No wave.

No hesitation.

Nothing.

Officer Brooks reached us seconds later.

“I told you to stay inside.”

Ethan pointed toward the street. “They just left.”

Brooks radioed the plate number.

I looked down.

Something white lay near the curb.

A page.

I picked it up.

The header read WHITMORE FAMILY HOLDINGS.

Half the page was legal language.

Then I saw my own name.

Claire Bennett Whitmore.

Below it:

In the event of documented incapacity, disappearance, abandonment of marital residence, or material breach of marital confidence—

I stared at the phrase.

“Abandonment?”

Ethan read over my shoulder.

“This is not in our prenup.”

“No.”

Rachel pointed lower.

“Look.”

A signature line.

My name had already been typed beneath it.

And above the line was a scanned version of my signature.

A very good one.

Ethan whispered, “They were going to make it look like you signed.”

I looked at the bottom of the page.

Witness:

Dr. Samuel Hart.

Notary:

Martin Cole.

Every piece connected.

The drink.

The diagnosis.

The altered prenup.

The proxy.

The merger.

This had never been about disliking me.

Vivian had not tried to humiliate me.

She had tried to turn me into paperwork.

Officer Brooks took the page carefully.

“This is enough to expand the investigation.”

My phone rang.

Hospital.

I answered.

A nurse said Richard Whitmore was awake and asking for me.

Not Ethan.

Me.

“Why?”

The nurse lowered her voice.

“He says he knows what was put in your champagne.”

May you like

I looked at Ethan.

“And he says you need to hear the truth before his wife reaches him.”
