Chapter 18 - The Last Lie

Ethan looked from me to his mother.
Then to the flash drive.
“Claire, are you okay?”
“Yes.”
Vivian laughed softly. “Of course you came.”
Ethan walked between us.
“Police are downstairs.”
“I know.”
“Then stop.”
“You sound like your father.”
“Maybe that’s because both of us finally understand what you’ve done.”
Vivian’s expression sharpened.
“Your father understood nothing. He was preparing to cut you out.”
She pointed to the drive.
“Read it.”
Ethan didn’t move.
I did.
On a conference room computer, I opened the files.
Emails between Richard and trustees.
Draft amendments.
Legal notes.
At first, Vivian seemed right.
Richard had considered restricting Ethan’s future control.
But then I saw the dates.
Three years old.
Before Ethan and I met.
And on the final page, a note from Richard:
Do not proceed. Ethan must be allowed to choose his own life, even if that means he chooses differently from us.
I looked at Vivian.
“You left out the last page.”
She did not answer.
Ethan read it over my shoulder.
His face changed from confusion to grief.
“You’ve been using an abandoned draft for three years?”
Vivian’s eyes flashed.
“Your father changes his mind because he is weak.”
“No,” Ethan said. “He changed his mind because people are allowed to change.”
She shook her head.
“You have no idea what I gave up for you.”
“Then why did you make me a contingency folder?”
That hit her.
Ethan stepped closer.
“You had documents ready to destroy my wife. Documents ready to destroy me. You drugged a drink at our wedding. You turned my marriage into a transaction.”
“I protected your future.”
“You protected your control.”
For the first time, Vivian’s composure shattered.
“I built that company!”
Her voice echoed across the dark office.
“I sat in rooms where men ignored me and then stole my ideas. I saved your grandfather from bankruptcy. I negotiated every ugly deal Richard was too polite to touch. And now I am supposed to smile while everyone hands the future to you because you got married?”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“You could have asked me to earn it.”
“I could not risk you saying no.”
There it was.
The truth beneath everything.
Not money.
Not Meridian.
Not even the family name.
Control.
Vivian looked at me.
“And you were the first person he loved enough to tell me no.”
Police footsteps approached from the stairwell.
Vivian heard them.
Her shoulders dropped.
Then she grabbed the flash drive and moved toward the shredder.
I stepped into her path.
“Don’t.”
She looked at me.
“You think this ends if I am arrested?”
“No.”
“Martin will bargain. Hart will lie. Richard will protect himself.”
“Maybe.”
“And Ethan will hate you for what happens to this family.”
Ethan answered from behind me.
“No, Mom.”
She turned.
He took off his wedding band and placed it on the table.
Vivian stared at it.
Then he said, “I will hate what you did. That is different.”
Officer Brooks entered.
May you like
Vivian closed her eyes.
And finally, she stopped fighting.
