Chapter 12 - The Smear Campaign

By morning my face was on screens in coffee shops and hotel lobbies. Strangers commented on the cost of my shoes, my apartment building, and my mother's death. One account claimed Noah wasn't my brother. Another posted our street name. I reported the threats, saved screenshots, and took Noah to stay with Rebecca for two nights.
âWhy are they talking about Mom like that?â Noah asked as we carried his backpack through the bookstore.
âBecause the truth threatens someone who has more money than patience.â
He stopped on the stairs. âI was ten when she died. I don't remember her voice anymore.â
I sat beside him and played the safe portion of her cassette recording. He listened twice, looking at the floor. Then he whispered, âShe sounds like you.â
I held him until his shoulders stopped shaking.
Our lawyer, Priya Shah, gathered the security footage, witness statements, threatening messages, and bank documents. She told me we'd have a strong case for the public accusations, but she also warned that a lawsuit wouldn't erase every lie from the internet.
Daniel offered a press conference. Priya advised against making the case about a wealthy groom rescuing a poor waitress. âEmily needs her own voice,â she said. âAnd she gets to choose when to use it.â
Gloria, the hotel manager, arrived with two bartenders and a housekeeper. They'd signed sworn statements describing Vanessa's behavior before the wedding. One bartender said the bride had ordered staff to remove me as soon as she learned my surname.
âHow did she learn it?â I asked.
Gloria lowered her eyes. âYour employee profile was requested through the event coordinator's office. I didn't authorize it.â

Tessa examined the request. The user account belonged to a foundation employee named Julian Cross, Richard's longtime assistant.
A few hours later, police located Cross's car abandoned near the railroad station. His work phone was found in the front seat. On it was an unsent message addressed to Vanessa: YOUR FATHER LIED TO BOTH OF US. I HAVE THE CRASH FILE.
