Chapter 1 - The Photograph

At 11:47 on Christmas Eve, while snow buried the iron gates outside our house, a photograph lit up my phone and ended my marriage.

Roman was in it.

So was Claire Bennett.

He had one arm around her waist outside the Langford Hotel downtown, his face lowered toward hers as if the whole city had disappeared. Claire's hand rested inside his coat. Roman's black SUV waited behind them with its lights on.

I stared at the picture until my unborn daughter kicked hard beneath my ribs.

"Okay," I whispered, pressing a palm to my stomach. "I felt that too."

Three hours earlier, Roman had stood in our kitchen and told me he had "business" in the city. I had asked him not to go. Not begged. Asked.

"Stay," I had said. "It's Christmas Eve. I'm thirty-six weeks pregnant. Stay home with your wife."

He had kissed my forehead like I was a child who had asked for one more cookie.

"You're tired, Savannah. Don't turn this into something it isn't."

Then he had left.

Now I sat beside a glowing tree in a house guarded by cameras and armed men. Roman called it safety. That night, it felt like a fence.

Margaret appeared at the archway in her robe, gray hair loose around her shoulders. She had worked for Roman's family since before our wedding.

"Mrs. Carter?"

I handed her the phone.

She looked once and closed her eyes.

That hurt more than the picture.

"You knew," I said.

"I suspected."

"How long?"

"Long enough to wish I had been wrong."

My throat tightened, but the tears would not come. Maybe I had cried them all during the months of unexplained dinners, locked screens, and canceled appointments.

I stood slowly.

"Where's my hospital bag?"

Margaret looked at me. "In the nursery closet."

"Bring it downstairs."

"Savannah..."

I slid my wedding ring from my finger. The pale line beneath it looked like a scar.

I placed the ring under the Christmas tree, directly in front of the silver gift Roman had left for me.

"I'm not waiting for morning."

Margaret went pale. "The guards won't let you leave without calling him."

I looked toward the security camera above the foyer.

Then my phone buzzed again.

This time the message was not a photograph.

It was from an unknown number.

DON'T USE YOUR CAR. HE TRACKS IT.
