Chapter 5 - The Family Price

Dad read the line twice.

Then he walked into the house without saying anything.

Mom followed.

Vanessa stood on the porch, crying now for real.

I should have left.

I wanted to.

But I knew my father. Silence meant he was either about to forgive something terrible or make a decision he would regret.

I opened Lily’s door.

“We’re staying five more minutes.”

She pulled off one earbud.

“Okay.”

“Keep listening.”

Inside, the Disney celebration had died.

The children were in the basement with Diane. Envelopes and red ribbon lay across the coffee table like evidence after a robbery.

Dad sat at the dining table with the loan documents.

“Call Daniel,” he said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“He’s working.”

“Call him.”

She did.

Daniel answered on the fourth ring.

“Hey, babe.”

Dad leaned toward the phone.

“You used my house to secure your business debt?”

Nothing.

Then a breath.

“David, let me explain.”

“No.” Dad’s voice cracked. “You answer first.”

Daniel tried the calm, reasonable tone he used at every family dinner.

“It wasn’t final. We were exploring options.”

“With fake signatures?”

“They’re electronic authorizations.”

“I did not authorize anything.”

Mom sat down hard.

Daniel went quiet.

Vanessa whispered, “We were going to tell you.”

“When?” I asked. “After the money cleared?”

She spun toward me.

“Shut up!”

“Vanessa,” Mom snapped.

My sister stared at her.

Mom had never used that tone with her.

Dad rubbed both hands over his face.

“How bad is the business?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Temporary cash-flow issue.”

“How bad?”

Another pause.

“One hundred sixty-two.”

Dad’s head lifted.

“Thousand?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked stunned.

“You told me eighty.”

Daniel said nothing.

She gripped the phone.

“You told me eighty thousand.”

“Vanessa—”

“You lied to me?”

The front door opened.

Lily stood there.

I had not heard her come in.

She held something in her hand.

One of the Disney envelopes.

“Mommy?”

I went to her immediately.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was under the seat in Aunt Vanessa’s car.”

Every adult in the room went still.

Lily handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

Not Lily’s.

Mine.

Inside was a printed itinerary.

Disney World. Seven nights.

Three rooms.

Nine travelers.

I counted the names.

Mom. Dad. Vanessa. Daniel. Their three kids.

Diane’s two kids.

No Lily.

No me.

At the bottom was a payment summary.

DEPOSIT PAID: $6,000.

CARDHOLDER: RACHEL MORGAN.

My hands went cold.

Vanessa took one look at the paper and whispered, “Oh, God.”
