Chapter 15 - The Warehouse

The warehouse had been purchased eight months earlier using a shell company.

Signer: Thomas Bell.

Beneficiary: Vanessa Reed.

Morales handed him a wire.

"You follow instructions."

"I understand."

"You do not improvise."

"I understand."

"You do not try to be a hero."

Daniel looked at her.

"I have a six-year-old daughter. I don't want to be a hero. I want to go home."

That answer satisfied her.

He looked exhausted.

Unshaven.

Wild-eyed.

"You brought it?"

Daniel lifted the case.

"Where's the rest of the material?"

Kyle laughed.

"Still making deals."

"I learned from the people around me."

Kyle's smile disappeared.

"You always thought you were smarter."

"No. I thought you were my friend."

That hit harder.

Kyle looked away.

"Vanessa said you treated her like furniture."

"Vanessa says whatever helps Vanessa."

"She loved me."

"Then why is she blaming you?"

Kyle's face changed.

Daniel pressed.

"She told police you forced her."

"She's lying."

"I know."

"She planned this too."

"I know."

Kyle stepped closer.

"She came up with the custody idea."

"Tell me."

Kyle's eyes moved to the case.

"Open it first."

Daniel placed it on a workbench.

"Hands where we can see them!"

Kyle ran.

He made it thirty feet.

Daniel stood still, heart pounding.

"You okay?"

"Yes."

Inside were boxes.

Hard drives.

Documents.

A portable printer.

And a wall covered in photographs.

Daniel walked closer.

Pictures of his house.

His office.

His bank.

Lily's school.

Megan's house.

It was an operation.

Morales pointed to a calendar.

Daniel stared at the first note.

Below it:

T: move funds gradually.

Then:

LILY = leverage.

Daniel had to walk outside.

Aaron joined him.

"They found a signed agreement."

"Between who?"

"Vanessa, Kyle, and Thomas."

Daniel looked at him.

"For what?"

Aaron handed him a photocopy.

Vanessa: forty percent.

Kyle: twenty.

Thomas: twenty.

Daniel frowned.

"Reserve for who?"

M.

Daniel stared.

Megan?

No.

Impossible.

M.C.

Aaron said, "Do you know someone with those initials?"

Daniel did.

"Melissa Crane."

His real-estate agent.
