Chapter 7 - The House Was Part of the Plan

Daniel had the entire network seized for forensic review.
But they made mistakes.
People always did.
One recovered log showed Vanessa opening a document titled "Custody Notes" at 2:13 a.m. three weeks earlier.
"What did they want?" Megan asked.
"Control."
"Of the company?"
"Of Lily's trust. Of the house. Of everything."
Megan shook her head. "Why tie Lily up at a party, then? That's not control. That's reckless."
"Because Vanessa thought Daniel wasn't coming."
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel stepped inside.
"She told us you had a late meeting."
"I canceled it."
"I know that now. She didn't."
"She wanted a photo."
Daniel frowned.
"What kind of photo?"
"Lily crying. Vanessa said she was going to prove Lily was 'out of control.' Then she said she needed to show how difficult it was to manage her without you."
Megan stared at her.
"And the rope?"
Rachel looked sick.
"Kyle suggested it."
Rachel kept talking.
"He said if Lily fought or kicked, Vanessa could claim she had to restrain her for safety."
"At a birthday party?" Megan snapped.
"They thought everyone would back Vanessa."
"Why would they?"
"Because most of us had already heard her version of you."
Daniel went still.
"What version?"
"That you screamed at Lily. That you disappeared for days. That you drank. That you threatened Vanessa."
None of it was true.
Not just a court case.
A story.
He looked at Rachel.
"Why did you record?"
"Because I stopped believing her."
"When?"
Rachel wiped her cheek.
"Three weeks ago. I saw Lily at the grocery store with Vanessa. Lily dropped a box of cereal. Vanessa leaned down and whispered something. Lily went completely still."
"What did she say?"
"I couldn't hear."
Rachel swallowed.
"But Lily's face looked like a child waiting for punishment."
"There's one more thing."
Vanessa had written:
Daniel read it twice.
Then three times.
Megan said, "They wanted you to come home."
Rachel nodded.
"Just not early."
Daniel understood.
The soaked child.
The rope.
The crowd.
Not only to hurt Lily.
To provoke Daniel.
"They were building a scene."
Daniel's phone buzzed.
Perfect angle.
No context.
