Chapter 17 - The Sale That Never Happened

The forged sale changed everything.
Arresting Vale, Pike, and Wade did not automatically return Elena’s land.
Redstone Development had already filed the deed.
On paper, Elena Morales no longer owned the bakery lot.
Dana hated saying it.
“The criminal case can prove fraud, but property court moves separately.”
Elena sat beside Luis’s hospital bed while Mateo paced.
“So they steal the land, get arrested, and still keep it?”
“Not if we can void the transfer,” Dana said. “But Redstone will claim it bought in good faith.”
Luis opened his eyes.
“No, they won’t.”
His voice was weak.
Mateo turned.
Luis pointed toward the jacket hanging over a chair.
“Inside pocket.”
Mateo found a small flash drive.
“What is this?”
“Redstone’s real ownership records.”
Dana plugged it into her secure laptop.
Minutes later, she stared at the screen.
Redstone Development was controlled through three shell companies.
The final beneficial owner was Earl Mercer’s estate.
Wade Mercer was trustee.
“Same criminal group,” Dana said. “That kills the good-faith argument.”
Mateo looked at his father.
“You had this the whole time?”
Luis nodded.
“Why didn’t you come home?”
The room went quiet.
Luis looked at Elena first.
Then Mateo.
“Because after enough years hiding, fear becomes habit.”
Mateo wanted to be angry.
He was angry.
But he also saw the scar along his father’s ribs, the old break in his nose, the way his hands shook when footsteps passed in the hall.
Survival had charged Luis a price too.
Elena reached for his hand.
“You should have trusted us.”
“I know.”
“That is not forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“But it is not goodbye either.”
Luis started crying.
Mateo looked away.
His phone rang.
Denise Harper.
He answered.
Her voice was panicked.
“Mateo, someone’s at the bakery ruins.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know. They’re digging behind the old foundation.”
Mateo looked at Dana.
She was already standing.
May you like
Denise whispered, “They found something.”
Then the line went dead.
