Chapter 19 - The Hearing

The emergency property hearing drew half the county.

Farmers.

Shop owners.

Retired mechanics.

People who had sold land to Mercer companies over the last fifteen years and suddenly wondered whether they had ever really chosen to sell.

Elena entered the courthouse wearing a simple navy dress and the same white apron she had worn at the bakery.

Mateo noticed.

“You brought the apron?”

“They met me wearing it,” she said. “They can see me win wearing it too.”

Inside, Redstone’s attorneys argued that the company had relied on a recorded deed and should be protected as a lawful buyer.

Dana’s office submitted the ownership chain proving Wade controlled Redstone.

Then came the forged signature analysis.

Then Shaw’s cooperation agreement.

Then Rafael’s original water-right document.

Grant Bell objected to nearly everything.

The judge overruled most of it.

Finally, Elena testified.

Bell approached carefully.

“Mrs. Morales, did you owe money?”

“Yes.”

“Did you miss payments?”

“Yes.”

“So Mercer Recovery had lawful grounds to pursue collection.”

“Collection is asking me to pay.”

She looked directly at him.

“Burning my bakery is something else.”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Bell tried again. “You cannot personally prove Mr. Mercer ordered that fire.”

“No.”

“So your claim is emotional.”

Elena’s face hardened.

“My claim is that your client filed a deed with my name on it three days before I ever agreed to sell.”

Bell opened his mouth.

Elena continued.

“I may be old. I may owe money. I may cry when a man throws my work on the floor.”

She leaned toward the microphone.

“But I know my own signature.”

Silence.

The judge recessed for thirty minutes.

It lasted ninety.

When she returned, everyone stood.

She ruled the deed void pending final fraud proceedings and restored provisional title to Elena.

People in the gallery began crying.

Mateo hugged his grandmother.

It was the first clean victory they had had.

Then Dana’s phone buzzed.

She read the message and went still.

“What?” Mateo asked.

May you like

Dana looked at Elena.

“Wade Mercer escaped during transport.”
