He Pushed His Own Mother Into the Lake… But What Happened Next Was TERRIFYING! 😱💔

I yelled, "Down!" and shoved Wren behind the kitchen counter.

A gunshot shattered the peephole. Wood flew past my cheek. Daniel screamed outside, and then came the sound of bodies falling against the porch railing.

Eli slammed the deadbolt into place. Marisol drew the compact pistol she carried legally and crossed to the side window. "One shooter," she said. "Dark jacket. Moving toward the trees."

June called 911 from a burner phone, asking for state officers, not Calder's deputies.

Daniel staggered through the back door a minute later. He had climbed off the porch and circled the cabin on his hands and knees. A bullet had torn through his upper arm.

When he saw me, he stopped breathing.

"Mom?"

"Don't." My voice cracked. "Don't use that word yet."

He sank against the refrigerator. Wren ran toward him, but I caught her before she touched the wound.

"Tell us who sent the shooter," Marisol ordered.

"Vale," Daniel gasped. "I told him I wouldn't go along with the hearing."

"What hearing?"

"Emergency guardianship. Stacey wants control of Mom's trust before a title audit on Monday. If she gets it, Vale can finish the sale."

"And if your mother is dead?" Marisol asked.

Daniel covered his face. "They claim she signed the documents before the accident."

I crouched as close as my bad leg allowed. "Did you know they killed your father?"

He looked up, horrified. "I knew Dad found the dumping. I thought they only threatened him. The night he died, Stacey told me he took his boat out alone."

"You believed her?"

"I wanted to."

The sirens grew louder. Daniel grabbed my wrist, not hard but desperate.

"Listen to me. Stacey isn't just working for Vale. She's his daughter. She changed her last name before we met."

I stared at him. Fifteen years of birthdays, holiday dinners, and careful smiles rearranged themselves in my head.
