Chapter 15 - What My Son Did

I watched the video four times. Each time, Daniel appeared at the wheel. Each time, my chest tightened until I could barely breathe.

"He said he wasn't there," I whispered.

"He lied," Marisol answered. She didn't try to soften it.

We drove to the hospital under state-police protection. Daniel was handcuffed to his bed, his face gray from blood loss and shame. I placed the laptop where he could see it.

"Tell me the truth," I said. "All of it. For once in your life, don't make me drag it out of you."

He looked at the frozen image of Robert. His lower lip trembled.

"Stacey told me Dad needed help with his boat. When I got there, Calder had him tied up. I tried to leave. Vale said he had proof I'd forged the property transfer. He said I'd go to prison and Wren would lose everything."

"So you drove the boat."

"Yes."

"And you watched your father die."

His eyes filled. "Calder hit him. Dad fell against the railing. Stacey injected something into his arm. He stopped moving. They made me take the wheel while they pushed him overboard."

I heard the monitor beside his bed beeping steadily. Such an ordinary sound for the destruction of a family.

"You should have gone to the police."

"I know."

"You should have told me."

"I know."

"And when they came for me, you helped them."

He didn't answer. He didn't need to.

I wanted to slap him. I wanted to hold him. The shame of wanting both made my hands shake.

"Your father loved you," I said. "That's the part you can never undo."

Daniel began to cry. I walked out before he could ask me to forgive him.

In the hallway, Marisol received a call from her prosecutor. The lab had agreed to test Robert's samples immediately, but Calder had filed a motion claiming our evidence was stolen and contaminated. Worse, a warrant had been issued for Marisol's arrest on charges of kidnapping Wren.

"That's ridiculous," I said.

"Of course it is. It still buys them time."

A hospital security officer approached with two deputies behind him.

"Ms. Vega," he said, "we need you to come with us."

Marisol handed me the equipment case.

"Whatever happens," she whispered, "don't let them get this."
