Chapter 11 - The Heir Room

Emergency lights painted the tunnel red.
Richard disappeared through a side door before Alexander could grab him.
Charles lay groaning near the wall.
Marcus zip-tied his wrists and left him there.
"Federal agents are six minutes out," he said.
Vale shook his head.
"We don't have six minutes."
The heir room sat below the river line.
If Richard initiated purge protocol, the chambers would flood with inert gas and erase biological evidence.
They followed Vale down a steel staircase.
The lower they went, the warmer the air became.
Emma heard machinery breathing.
Not metaphorically.
Inhale.
Pause.
Exhale.
Rows of artificial gestation systems filled the final chamber.
Most were empty.
Some contained preserved tissue samples.
Three were active.
Emma could not make herself look closely at first.
Then she did.
Developing fetuses floated inside transparent fluid systems connected to synthetic placental circuits.
Human.
Alive.
Evelyn covered Noah's eyes though he was too young to understand.
Alexander stared at the labels.
HARRISON LINE A.
HARRISON LINE B.
HARRISON LINE C.
Richard stood at the central control station.
"Turn it off," Alexander said.
"That would kill them."
"Then stop the purge."
"That would preserve the evidence."
Emma stepped forward.
"They're not evidence."
Richard looked at her.
"You are learning."
"No. You're not."
She moved toward the nearest chamber.
Richard's hand hovered over a control.
"One more step and the system terminates."
Alexander froze.
The old man had finally found the perfect shield.
Not money.
Not lawyers.
Children.
Rebecca studied the control panel.
She whispered to Emma, "The purge is linked to his palm."
Emma understood.
The same live biometric trick.
If Richard's hand left the sensor abruptly, purge.
If his pulse stopped, purge.
If the console lost power, purge.
A dead man's switch in the literal sense.
Emma looked at Grace.
Then Noah.
Then the chamber speakers.
Four notes.
The system used sound for synchronization.
She asked Vale, "Can the lullaby override maintenance?"
His eyes widened.
"Maybe."
Richard heard.
"Don't be foolish."
Emma smiled faintly.
"You trained babies to carry your passwords. I think foolish left the building hours ago."
She began humming.
Four notes.
Grace answered.
Noah followed.
The active chambers shifted rhythm.
Richard's face changed.
Emma added the fifth note.
The chamber system entered diagnostic mode.
Vale ran to a secondary console.
"Keep them vocalizing."
Evelyn, crying now, hummed too.
Rebecca joined.
Alexander stood motionless, watching his family sing to machines built by his father.
Then he added his voice.
Low.
Unsteady.
Four notes.
The diagnostic panel unlocked.
Vale bypassed purge control.
"Got it!"
Richard lifted his palm.
Nothing happened.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not strategic.
Not powerful.
Old.
Federal agents stormed the upper corridor.
Marcus shouted for them.
Richard looked at Alexander.
"If you expose this, Harrison International collapses. Thousands of employees. Pension funds. Projects. Your name."
Alexander walked toward him.
"Then we'll build something that doesn't require buried women and stolen children."
Richard laughed softly.
"You think truth makes clean foundations?"
"No."
Alexander looked at Emma.
"People do."
Agents entered.
Richard was handcuffed beside the machines he had spent decades protecting.
Charles was taken upstairs on a stretcher under guard.
The three active systems remained stable.
For the first time all night, nobody was running.
Then Marcus approached Emma with a phone.
"You need to see this."
The archive had gone public.
So had one final file.
A birth record.
EMMA CARTER.
Biological mother: Laura Mercer.
Biological father:
Richard Harrison.
Emma looked across the room.
May you like
At the old man in handcuffs.
He smiled.
