Chapter 14 - The Name He Never Expected

“Who?” Richard asked.
Officer Brooks slid a photocopy across the table.
The mechanic’s payment record listed a consulting firm.
Vance Strategic Solutions.
Victoria’s company.
Richard stared at the name.
His first instinct was disbelief.
His second was rage.
Brooks spoke carefully. “The mechanic claims Victoria contacted him directly.”
“Marcus ordered it.”
“Maybe. But the mechanic says the woman gave the instructions.”
Richard looked through the hospital-room glass at Maya.
Ella sat near the bed, reading a picture book softly.
Maya slept with one hand resting on the stuffed rabbit.
“She killed Maya’s mother,” Richard said.
“We’re still investigating.”
“Then she walked into my life and made herself necessary.”
Brooks did not argue.
The pattern now looked horrifyingly clear.
Caroline had discovered financial crimes.
Victoria had removed the threat.
Marcus had continued stealing.
Then Victoria had built a relationship with the grieving widower whose fortune sat at the center of everything.
But greed had fractured the partnership.
Marriage would give Victoria access and influence, but not direct control of Maya’s protected trust.
So they had developed a second plan.
A fake guardianship.
A new identity.
A disappearance.
And after the merger, Marcus planned to remove Richard too.
Richard felt like every memory of the last three years had been poisoned.
Victoria at Maya’s first birthday.
Victoria comforting him on Caroline’s anniversary.
Victoria choosing flowers for the wedding.
Victoria telling him he deserved to love again.
A detective entered.
“We searched Ms. Vance’s penthouse.”
Richard looked up.
“We found a safe behind a painting. Inside were duplicate keys to this estate, burner phones, and letters.”
“What letters?”
The detective handed him a plastic evidence sleeve.
Inside was a page written in Caroline’s handwriting.
Richard recognized it instantly.
His hands shook.
The note began:
Richard, if you are reading this, I was right to be afraid.
His eyes blurred.
He forced himself to continue.
Caroline wrote that she had discovered Marcus’s hidden accounts.
She also wrote one sentence that made his blood run cold.
Victoria knows I found them.
At the bottom, Caroline had written:
If anything happens to me, protect Maya from both of them.
Richard closed his eyes.
His wife had warned him.
He had never received the letter.
Then the detective said, “There’s one more thing.”
Richard opened his eyes.
“The envelope was addressed to you.”
“Where was it found?”
May you like
The detective answered.
“In Victoria’s safe.”
