Chapter 1 - The Hand in the Closet

The first thing I saw was my husband buttoning his shirt like he'd been caught running from a fire.
The second thing I saw was a woman's hand inside our closet.
I stood in the bedroom doorway with one palm under my belly and the ultrasound photo trembling in the other. Daniel looked up so fast he missed a button.
"Why are you getting dressed?" I asked.
His eyes moved past me for half a second, toward the open wardrobe.
"I was just about to leave."
That was wrong. Daniel Bennett never left for work at eleven in the morning without his jacket, his watch, and the leather briefcase he treated like a third arm. His jacket was on the chair. His watch was on the nightstand. His briefcase was closed beside the bed.
I had driven home from my doctor's appointment because I couldn't wait to show him the new ultrasound. Our daughter had turned her face toward the camera. You could make out the tiny curve of her nose.
I lifted the picture. "I came to show you this."
For one heartbeat, something real crossed his face. Love. Fear. Maybe both.
Then the beige coats inside the wardrobe shifted.
A hand tightened around the fabric.
Long pale fingers. Red polish. A thick gold ring with a square green stone.
I knew that ring.
I'd seen it in a framed photograph that used to sit in Daniel's mother's hallway before she quietly removed it two years ago.
My eyes rose toward the closet.
Daniel stepped between us.
"Claire." His voice dropped. "Don't."
That single word hit me harder than any confession.
I looked at my husband, then at the hand behind him.
"Who is in our closet?"
No answer.
The ultrasound photo slipped from my fingers and landed faceup on the carpet.
The hidden woman moved.
A coat slid aside.
May you like
And a voice I had heard only once before, on an old family video, whispered from the darkness:
"Daniel, she deserves to know I'm alive."
