Chapter 3 - A Marriage Built on Missing Pieces

Daniel ripped the phone from my hand.
"Who sent that?" I demanded.
"I don't know."
"Stop lying!"
His jaw tightened. "I said I don't know."
Evelyn gave a short, bitter laugh. "That's what he says when the truth is expensive."
Daniel spun toward her. "You don't get to do this."
"I came back because you wouldn't."
Their anger was old. Deep. The kind people build over years, not twenty minutes in a closet.
I looked from one to the other and realized I had walked into a story that started long before I met Daniel.
"Start talking," I said. "Now."
Evelyn sat on the edge of the bed but kept both hands visible, as if she knew I no longer trusted the room.
Six years earlier, she said, Daniel had worked for his family's real-estate company, Bennett Development. She had handled compliance. One night she found documents showing that Daniel's father, Richard Bennett, had been using shell companies to hide money and pressure elderly property owners into selling below market value.
"I copied everything," Evelyn said. "The next morning, my car was followed. Two days later, someone cut the fuel line on Daniel's boat."
Daniel snapped, "We never proved that."
"You were supposed to be on that boat with me."
I stared at him.
He rubbed both hands over his face. "The boat caught fire near the marina. Evelyn got off before it spread. My father believed she died because that was safer for her. We let him believe it."
"You let everyone believe it," I said.
Including me.
Evelyn had disappeared under another name. Daniel claimed they ended the marriage privately and legally through sealed filings.
"Then why is she back?"
Neither answered immediately.
I felt my daughter move inside me, one hard kick beneath my ribs.
Evelyn finally reached into her coat and pulled out a small flash drive.
"Because Richard is sick," she said. "And he's moving everything before he dies."
Daniel stared at the drive.
"What's on it?" I asked.
May you like
Evelyn looked straight at me.
"A file with your name on it."
