I WAS ABOUT TO PROPOSE TO THE WOMAN I LOVED—UNTIL MY 6-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER POINTED AT THE POOL AND SCREAMED, “DADDY, DON’T! SHE’S HIDING SOMETHING IN THE WATER!”

“DADDY, DON'T MARRY HER! LOOK IN THE POOL!”

My six-year-old daughter screamed those words just as I opened a diamond ring box and dropped to one knee.

I froze.

Standing in front of me was Vanessa, the beautiful woman I had planned to spend the rest of my life with.

Her red evening gown shimmered in the afternoon sunlight.

Everything was perfect.

Until my little girl started crying.

“Daddy, please! Don't give her the ring!”

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“She's just jealous,” she snapped. “Don't let a child ruin our special moment.”

But Lily wasn't looking at the ring.

She was pointing at something floating near the far edge of our swimming pool.

“Daddy! SHE PUT SOMETHING IN THERE!”

I turned toward the water.

At first, I saw nothing but sunlight dancing across the turquoise surface.

Then I noticed something beneath a floating pool cover.

Something that looked like a human hand.

I dropped the ring box and lunged toward the water.

Behind me, Vanessa screamed.

“NO! DON'T TOUCH THAT!”

Her voice wasn't frightened.

It was furious.

I pulled back the cover, and my blood ran cold.

Someone was underneath it.

Someone who should never have been inside my home.

As I desperately reached into the water, Lily whispered something that made my heart nearly stop.

“Daddy… I saw Vanessa talking to that person last night.”

I looked back at the woman I had been about to marry.

She was already backing toward the garden gate.

And in her hand was a phone.

On its screen, a message had just appeared:

“DID HE FIND THE BODY YET?”

That was the moment I realized my daughter hadn't interrupted a marriage proposal.

She had stopped me from marrying a woman who might have planned my murder.

But what the police discovered inside that swimming pool was only the beginning.

And when I finally learned why Vanessa had chosen me, I wished I had listened to my daughter months earlier…
