Chapter 8 - The Second Ring

Daniel's mother had left him a modest construction business. He had built it into something substantial, but he still knew how to spot a bad invoice and a forged signature.
He spread six months of bank statements across his dining table while Rachel watched Lily in the next room.
"Why didn't you notice this sooner?" Rachel asked.
"Because I trusted her."
Under ordinary household expenses, he found monthly payments to a consulting company called Northstar Family Services. The amounts were small enough to avoid attention. Together they totaled nearly eighty thousand dollars.
The bank records had felt comforting when Daniel first opened them. Columns, dates and balances gave him a problem he could measure. He was good with problems that could be measured. He could price labor, calculate the cost of a late delivery or show a client where a bid had gone wrong. What he couldn't calculate was the price of ignoring a frightened daughter. Rachel slid a second cup of coffee in front of him and told him to eat. He took one bite of toast before finding another invoice with Lily's name on it. Someone had billed a counseling session on the day Lily was at the zoo with her class. He remembered waving goodbye to her at the bus that morning. The false entry made his hands shake.
Vanessa had claimed the charges were for Lily's tutoring and a therapist.
"Lily doesn't have a therapist," Rachel said.
"I know."
Daniel called the bank. A representative confirmed that someone had requested adding Vanessa as an authorized user on a business account. The request had not been approved, but it included an electronic image of Daniel's signature.
The signature was close. Too close.
He remembered the engagement ring. Vanessa had insisted that he purchase it through an unusual private jeweler. He checked the receipt. The vendor address matched Northstar's registered mailbox.
"The ring was a payment route," Rachel said.
"Or a way to make sure she could prove I'd entered a transaction with them."
His phone chimed with a calendar reminder Vanessa had created: ESTATE PLANNING CONSULTATION, FRIDAY 9 A.M.
He hadn't agreed to that meeting.

As he opened the attachment, his stomach tightened. It was a draft trust amendment placing temporary control of his business and Lily's inheritance in Vanessa's hands if he became incapacitated.
At the bottom was a line marked: SIGNED BY DANIEL MERCER.
