Chapter 16 - The Badge in the Photograph

Evelyn sat in a secure interview room with a paper cup of tea untouched before her. Her teenage daughter waited with a victim advocate nearby.

"I kept copies because they ordered me to destroy records," Evelyn said. "I knew eventually they'd say it was all my fault."

She described a network that moved money through inflated care invoices, false vendor accounts and property deals. Vanessa had helped pressure isolated families for signatures. Robert had provided access to legitimate construction contracts.

"And the person with a badge?" Maya asked.

"Deputy Chief Warren Pike. He made complaints disappear."

Maya had spent years learning to trust the details that people tried to hurry past. Evelyn's hands were trembling, but her story remained consistent when investigators asked about times and places. She remembered a particular invoice because a spelling mistake appeared on three supposedly independent forms. She remembered Pike's watch because he tapped it against her desk while telling her to keep quiet. Maya took notes without promising an outcome. She had seen promising investigations fail on small procedural errors. That was why she insisted on proper evidence handling when the order to surrender the files arrived. Whoever was applying pressure had chosen the wrong room and the wrong detective.

Maya's expression didn't change, but Daniel saw her fingers tighten around her pen.

Evelyn produced a photograph taken at a Harbor House fundraiser. Robert stood beside Vanessa. On her other side was a broad-shouldered man with closely cropped hair and a silver watch.

The same silver watch appeared on the wrist visible in Lily's video, beside the blue jacket.

"Pike was at my house," Daniel whispered.

"We need to verify that," Maya said.

At that moment an alert sounded on Maya's phone: emergency administrative leave pending an internal review. A second message instructed her to surrender her badge and case files to the chief's office.

She looked at Evelyn, then at Daniel.

"Nobody takes this evidence anywhere until the state investigators get here."

Outside the interview room, footsteps approached. Someone tried the locked door.
