Chapter 17 - The Relationship Was Arranged

Daniel did not speak for a long time.

Eighteen months earlier was exactly when he had met Madeline at a charity dinner.

He had believed it was chance.

She had spilled sparkling water near his chair, laughed, and offered to replace his ruined program.

He had thought the awkwardness was charming.

Now there was a memo.

The document described Daniel as “founder/CEO, emotionally close to father, potentially hostile heir to dormant intellectual-property claim.”

It recommended “relationship integration” as the lowest-risk method of neutralizing future litigation.

Rebecca stopped reading.

Even she looked disgusted.

Daniel turned to Madeline. “Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did you know before you met me?”

“No.”

“Did your mother tell you to attend that dinner?”

Madeline’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“Did she tell you where I’d be sitting?”

Madeline covered her mouth.

Daniel stood up.

“Daniel, I didn’t know why.”

He walked to the far side of the room.

Every memory was contaminated now.

Their first dinner.

Their first trip.

The night she met Thomas and charmed him by asking about old engines.

Their engagement.

Had anything been real?

Madeline cried behind him. “I fell in love with you.”

Daniel turned.

“Maybe you did. But I don’t know where the plan ended and you began.”

That was the truth that hurt most.

Malik interrupted quietly. “There’s another linked file.”

Rebecca said, “Open it.”

It was a message from Eleanor to Victor.

Subject: FINAL PHASE.

The text was brief.

Once married, Carter will be legally and reputationally constrained from pursuing legacy claims. Madeline remains useful if compliant. If not, isolate her financially.

Madeline read it twice.

“She was going to cut me out too.”

Rebecca nodded. “Looks that way.”

Madeline began to laugh.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the last illusion had finally broken.

Daniel almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then Malik found the wire destination for the twelve million dollars.

It had not gone offshore.

It had gone to a domestic escrow account controlled by a law firm.

Rebecca recognized the firm immediately.

“They represent Whitmore creditors.”

Daniel frowned. “So Eleanor used my father’s money to pay family debt.”

“Partly.”

Malik scrolled.

Only nine million had gone to creditors.

The remaining three million had been wired to a private account.

Account holder: Eleanor Whitmore.

Madeline stared at the screen.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

One text from her mother.

COME HOME. WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE THEY TURN YOU AGAINST ME.

May you like

A second message arrived immediately.

AND BRING ARTHUR’S LETTER.
