Chapter 6 - The First Lie Madeline Told

Daniel did not move.

The flame trembled beneath the envelope.

“You burn that,” he said, “and you burn your leverage.”

Eleanor’s smile thinned. “Not all of it.”

Madeline stepped between them. “Mom, put it down.”

“Move.”

“No.”

For the first time that night, Madeline sounded frightened of her mother.

Eleanor snapped the lighter shut.

Daniel’s phone vibrated twice: Rebecca’s signal that hotel security and police had been contacted.

He needed Eleanor to keep talking.

“What exactly did Madeline agree to?” he asked.

Madeline looked at him. “Daniel—”

“No. Say it.”

Eleanor answered for her. “Your marriage protected the acquisition.”

Daniel stared.

Eleanor continued. “A united family reassures lenders. Your company’s cash stabilizes Whitmore Holdings. Whitmore assets increase your valuation. Everyone wins.”

“Except my father.”

“He is irrelevant.”

Madeline whispered, “He wasn’t supposed to come tonight.”

The words cut through Daniel.

“What?”

She covered her mouth too late.

Daniel stepped closer. “You told me the seating chart was full. You said your mother accidentally left him off the first invitation list.”

Madeline’s face collapsed.

“It wasn’t an accident.”

“Why?”

“Mom thought he might say something to the board members.”

“He has never even met them.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you let her treat him like that?”

Madeline’s voice cracked. “Because every time I pushed back, she threatened to destroy my father’s medical trust, my sister’s house, everything. She controls everyone.”

Daniel shook his head. “You still made a choice.”

“I loved you.”

“Loved?”

“I love you.”

“Then why was my signature forged?”

Madeline went silent.

Eleanor looked almost amused.

Daniel’s voice hardened. “Who used my certificate?”

Madeline’s tears fell.

“I did.”

Daniel could not speak.

“I knew your password,” she said. “I used your face scan from the setup video Malik sent when your laptop was replaced. Mom had someone spoof the biometric check.”

Daniel felt physically cold.

All the little moments came back at once. Madeline asking about his passwords. Madeline joking that he worked too much. Madeline insisting he leave his laptop in the bridal suite before the ceremony.

None of it had been random.

A knock hit the door.

Eleanor’s head turned.

Hotel security entered with two police officers.

Rebecca stepped in behind them.

“Eleanor Whitmore,” she said calmly, “put the envelope and lighter on the table.”

For one second, Eleanor looked shocked.

Then she smiled.

“Rebecca,” she said. “You should have checked who owns this hotel.”

The hotel manager appeared behind the officers.

His face was white.

He looked at Daniel and said, “Sir, there’s a problem.”

May you like

“What problem?”

“The security footage from this floor has been erased.”
