Chapter 1 - The Send Button

“You think anyone’s going to believe you?”
Grant’s voice filled the shed before the door finished swinging shut.
I kept my wrists together near the wooden support beam and forced myself not to look at the rope hanging from his hand.
The late-afternoon light cut through the narrow doorway in one bright strip, leaving the rest of the shed in shadow.
His mother, Linda, stood outside with her arms folded over a burgundy cardigan.
“Let her remember her place,” she said.
Grant smiled without humor.
I looked past him.
At first, I saw only the edge of the fence and the corner of the shed.
Then something moved.
A faded green sleeve.
My daughter, Ellie.
Ten years old.
Too quiet for her age because she had learned what happened when grown-ups heard too much.
My heart nearly stopped.
I wanted to shout for her to run.
I didn’t.
Grant was watching my face.
“What?” he snapped.
“Nothing.”
Outside, Ellie pressed herself against the wall. I saw the black edge of her old phone against her hoodie.
The cracked screen glowed.
She was recording.
Grant took a step closer.
“You don’t get to hide money from me, Emily.”
“It was mine before we married.”
“Everything in this house is ours.”
“No. Everything you can reach becomes yours.”
His jaw tightened.
Linda clicked her tongue. “Still talking back.”
Grant lifted the rope, not striking, just letting me see it.
That was his favorite kind of threat. The kind that made you imagine the rest yourself.
I heard the faintest vibration outside.
Ellie’s thumb moved across the phone.
SEND.
For one second, the screen reflected in the shed window.
AUNT SARAH.
My sister.
My breath caught.
Grant noticed.
He turned toward the door.
Ellie dropped behind the corner just before he looked outside.
“What are you staring at?” he asked.
I forced my eyes back to him.
“You.”
He stepped closer.
Somewhere beyond the fence, a dog barked.
A car door slammed two houses away.
And in Ellie’s hand, the video left our property and entered the one place Grant could no longer control.
Sarah’s phone.
May you like
Then Ellie’s cracked screen lit up with three words.
I’M COMING NOW.
