Chapter 16 - The Draft

The email draft was written nine months earlier.
It read like concern.
That made it worse.
Emily has been under enormous emotional pressure lately.
She has talked about needing to get away.
She sometimes becomes confused and overwhelmed.
If she leaves without telling anyone, please remember she may not be thinking clearly.
Grant had written it to no one in particular.
A script waiting for an audience.
Emily read it twice.
Then she pushed the laptop away.
“I want him to see me in court.”
Sarah turned toward her.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
“You can use remote testimony if they allow it.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Emily looked at the cracked phone beside the computer.
“Because for five years he controlled where I stood, where I looked, what I said, how loudly I said it.”
Her voice remained calm.
“I want one room where he doesn’t get to decide any of that.”
The first major hearing came two weeks later.
Grant entered wearing a navy suit and the expression of a man trying to look misunderstood.
Linda sat behind her attorney.
She did not look at Emily.
Kyle did.
He sat in the back row alone.
When Emily took her seat beside the victim advocate, Grant finally glanced over.
His face tightened.
He mouthed two words.
You did this.
Emily stared back.
Then she mouthed one.
No.
The prosecutor presented the video Ellie had sent Sarah.
Only a short portion.
Enough to establish the immediate threat and context.
Grant’s attorney argued that the rope had not been used to injure anyone on camera.
The judge looked over his glasses.
“Counsel, the absence of a recorded strike does not erase the surrounding conduct.”
Emily watched Grant’s confidence fade by one degree.
Then came the financial evidence.
The forged documents.
The stolen savings.
The notebook.
The school photo.
The prosecutor asked for continued detention and strict no-contact orders.
Grant’s attorney stood again.
“My client disputes the interpretation of nearly every item presented.”
The judge nodded.
“He may dispute them at trial.”
The gavel came down.
Grant would remain in custody.
Linda’s conditions tightened.
As deputies led Grant away, he turned toward Emily.
He smiled.
Not confidently.
Desperately.

Then he said loud enough for her to hear:
“Ask Kyle who really opened the policy.”
