Chapter 15 - William's Name

At the police station, the final page of the ledger showed a transfer authorization bearing William Sterling’s signature.
Eight million dollars.
Transferred six years earlier.
William stared at it.
“I never signed this.”
Detective Ortiz studied the page. “It looks real.”
“It isn’t.”
Daniel leaned closer. “Could Arthur have had access to your signature?”
“My father had access to everything.”
The transfer moved through three shell companies before landing in a private investment fund under William’s name.
He had unknowingly benefited from the theft.
The news leaked before breakfast.
By nine, reporters were camped outside the mansion.
STERLING HEIR LINKED TO CHARITY FRAUD.
By ten, the foundation board suspended William.
By eleven, federal investigators requested an interview.
Eleanor entered the library just before noon.
“You see now?” she said. “This is what I protected you from.”
William looked exhausted. “You protected me by making me part of it.”
“Your father used your name. I made sure no one found out.”
“You let stolen money sit in an account under my identity.”
“I kept the family intact.”
“No. You kept the family silent.”
Charlotte entered holding Emma’s hand.
William softened immediately.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
She climbed into his lap.
“Are bad people coming?”
“No.”
“Police came before.”
“They’re helping.”
She thought about that.
Then she looked at Eleanor.
“Grandma said Daddy might go away.”
William slowly raised his eyes.
Eleanor stiffened.
“When did she say that?”
Charlotte pointed toward the hall. “When you were gone.”
Emma’s face hardened.
William stood with Charlotte in his arms.
“You were trying to scare her.”
“I was preparing her.”
“For what?”
Eleanor looked at him with cold certainty.
“For the fact that federal agents are about to arrest you.”
The doorbell rang.
Then came a hard knock.
“Federal agents! Open the door!”
William was taken into custody in front of thirty cameras.
He refused to hide his face.
Charlotte watched from an upstairs window with Emma.
That hurt more than the handcuffs.
At the federal building, prosecutors showed him bank records, signatures, and corporate filings that made him look like a willing beneficiary of the stolen funds.
“You signed annual disclosures,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Reed said.
“I signed what my father’s accountants put in front of me.”
“That is not a defense.”
“No. It’s an explanation.”
Reed slid a document across the table.
It was a life-insurance trust created after Claire’s death.
One beneficiary: Charlotte Sterling.
One trustee: Isabella Crane.
William stared at it.
“I never approved this.”
“The signature says otherwise.”
He looked closer.
Same forgery style.
Same careful imitation.
Then he noticed the witness signature.
Eleanor Sterling.
William leaned back.
“My mother was setting this up.”
“For Isabella?”
“No. For control of Charlotte’s money if I went down.”
Reed watched him carefully. “Can you prove it?”
William thought of Claire’s letters.
Not the ones from the rabbit.
The ones mentioned in her recording.
Her storybook.
“Maybe.”
His lawyer arranged temporary release pending a bail hearing.
William returned home after dark.
Charlotte ran into his arms.
“I knew you’d come back.”
He held her too tightly.
Emma brought Claire’s old storybook from the nursery.
It was a thick illustrated edition of The Secret Garden.
William opened the cover.
Nothing.
He turned page after page.
Then Charlotte reached over.
“Mommy read from the back.”
She flipped the book upside down.
Inside the rear cover was a slit.
William pulled out a sealed letter addressed to Federal Prosecutor Reed.
He opened it.
May you like
Claire had written one line on the first page.
If William is accused, Eleanor has decided to sacrifice her own son.
