Chapter 18 - Rachel’s Last Recording

Rachel Crane had recorded the conversation the night before she died.

Arthur Sterling’s voice came first.

“You don’t understand the scale of this.”

Rachel answered, “I understand children’s treatment money is paying for private jets and political favors.”

Then Eleanor spoke.

“Take the settlement and walk away.”

“I won’t.”

“You have a daughter.”

“So do you.”

The tape went quiet for several seconds.

Then Rachel said, “That is exactly why I’m not letting this continue.”

William listened with Emma beside him.

Emma cried silently.

Isabella, recovering under guard at the hospital, asked to hear the recording too.

William allowed it.

When Rachel’s voice filled the hospital room, Isabella turned her face toward the window.

“I spent half my life thinking Arthur killed her,” she whispered.

“You still threatened Claire,” William said.

“I know.”

“You helped Marcus steal.”

“I know.”

“You put Charlotte in danger.”

Isabella’s eyes filled. “I know.”

William did not forgive her.

He did not need to hate her either.

The truth was enough.

Federal prosecutors charged Eleanor, Marcus, and several former foundation executives. Isabella agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration on some charges, but she still faced prison for extortion, fraud, and child endangerment.

William was cleared of intentional participation after forensic analysts proved his signatures had been replicated from old documents.

But the Sterling name was destroyed exactly as Eleanor predicted.

Donors vanished.

Board members resigned.

Hospitals suspended partnerships.

One morning, William stood in the empty foundation lobby staring at his father’s name carved in stone.

Emma joined him.

“What are you going to do?”

William looked at the letters Claire had left.

“Take the name off the building.”

“And the foundation?”

He thought of Charlotte.

“Keep the part that was supposed to help people.”

Then his phone rang.

Detective Ortiz.

“We found one more account,” she said.

William’s stomach tightened.

“In whose name?”

May you like

Ortiz paused.

“Charlotte’s.”
