Chapter 14 - A Father's Price

"How do you know where I am?" I asked.

"Does it matter? I've spent thirty-five years protecting this family."

"You made my wife disappear."

Arthur exhaled. "Vivian told me Mara was unstable and planning to publish stolen financial records. I approved a medical evaluation. I didn't authorize what followed."

"Then why did you stand at her funeral?"

Silence.

"Because by then I was frightened of what the truth would cost."

It was the first honest sentence I'd heard from him in months. It changed nothing.

"What's in the nursery?"

"A document that will destroy the foundation and every hospital it funds. People will lose work. Children will lose treatment. You can stop that."

"Those children were already robbed," I said. "You just made the robbery wear a charity badge."

"Don't pretend you're innocent. You let me handle everything after the accident."

His words hit their mark. I had let him handle everything. But I hadn't known what he was handling.

"I'm responsible for what I failed to question," I said. "You're responsible for what you did. Those aren't the same thing."

I ended the call and gave the recording to Simone. She warned me not to confront Arthur again without counsel present.

By dawn, police were gathering evidence at Briar Glen under judicial authorization. Dr. Quill was being interviewed. Mara had a protective order application pending, and her case had been referred to state authorities.

At eight fifteen, Simone and I appeared remotely for the emergency custody hearing Arthur's attorneys had sought. Vivian submitted a statement describing my behavior at the gala as erratic.

"My client acted on information that his missing wife was alive," Simone said. "That information has now been independently confirmed."

A representative from the hospital confirmed Mara's identity and current condition without disclosing unnecessary medical details. The judge declined to grant Arthur temporary custody and ordered a fuller hearing after investigation.

I should have felt relief.

Then Lydia called.

"Evan," she said, keeping her voice level, "a woman is at my door. She's wearing a county family-services badge and says she's here to take Theo."
