Chapter 2 - The Service Door

I had spent five months imagining what I would do if someone told me Mara was alive.

I never pictured myself following a hotel employee past a cart of dirty dishes while my infant son gnawed a silver pendant.

"Start talking," I said.

Nora pushed through a service door into a narrow passage that smelled of coffee and bleach.

"Not until that man stops following us."

I looked back. The security guard from the ballroom had reached the door. His earpiece flashed blue.

"I own half this hotel," I said. "Why would security follow me?"

"Ask yourself who gave them orders."

I ducked into an open linen room. Nora followed, and I pulled the door nearly shut.

Theo stared at her, hiccuped once, then pressed the silver moon against his cheek. Mara used to let him hold it while she sang him to sleep. I had searched the wreckage of her ambulance transfer for that necklace. The police said the chain was never found.

"Tell me where she is."

"A private recovery center outside Hudson. The records call her Anna Reed. They keep her in a locked wing."

"Why would anyone do that?"

"Because she remembers something somebody paid a lot of money to hide."

My mouth went dry.

Five months earlier, Mara had been transferred from St. Agnes after complications from an injury sustained in a highway collision. The ambulance transporting her to a specialist had crashed on a rain-slick bridge. It burned. The hospital told me there were no survivors.

I had signed the papers through a haze of sedatives and grief.

Nora reached inside her jacket. I flinched before I could stop myself.

She removed a folded napkin covered with tight blue handwriting.

I recognized Mara's habit of crossing her sevens, but grief had made me easy to fool. I took a hard breath and forced myself to read.

Evan, they will say I am confused. I am not. Look at the west stairwell camera. Keep Theo away from Arthur.

Arthur was my father.

Footsteps stopped outside the linen room.

A radio crackled. "Find the employee. Mr. Mercer doesn't leave the building."

Then someone began turning the handle.
