Chapter 1 - The Man Who Missed

The first punch came before the toast.

It cut through chandelier light toward Elena Ward's face, fast enough to make thirty-eight dinner guests gasp at once. Her husband, Victor, was a broad-shouldered man with a dark beard and a black tuxedo jacket hanging open over his white shirt. He had always believed his size settled arguments. Tonight, in the gilded ballroom of the Bellwether Hotel, he intended to prove it.

Elena turned her shoulder. His fist rushed past her cheek. Champagne rattled. Somewhere behind her, somebody whispered, "Oh, my God."

"Stand still," Victor growled.

"That," Elena said, "is the last thing I'll ever do for you."

He swung again. She ducked, the dark length of her hair cutting across her crimson gown. His fist met nothing. He twisted into a wild high kick; Elena leaned back, shifted her black heels, and watched his polished shoe slash past her chest. She didn't hit him. She didn't need to. Seven years ago, before the marriage and before the money, her father had taught her how to move when someone bigger wanted to make her afraid: Keep your feet. Keep your head. Find the door.

Victor charged. Elena sidestepped. His momentum took him stumbling toward an empty chair. He recovered, furious, and lunged again. This time she caught his forearm for one brief instant and guided him past her. His right knee struck marble. His other foot skidded. The impact echoed under the crystal chandeliers, and Victor rolled onto his side, stunned.

Elena looked down at the man who had smiled at cameras with his arm around her waist. "You forgot one thing," she said quietly. "People are watching."

She walked toward the doors without looking back. Guests parted around the long red sweep of her dress. At the threshold, a young server stepped into her path, trembling so hard the silver tray in his hands rattled.

"Mrs. Ward," he whispered, "please don't leave. They took my sister downstairs."

Elena stopped. "Who took her?"

May you like

The server swallowed. "Your husband. And she's not the first."
