Chapter 16 - Everything Has a Witness

Victor retained a new criminal defense lawyer and stopped speaking to Elena directly. His attorney approached prosecutors about a cooperation agreement. Celia hired a different legal team and began selling her holdings. Bellamy took sudden medical leave. The city looked the same, but beneath the surface everyone was moving.
Elena filed for divorce, this time on her terms. She requested a fair accounting of marital assets, protection from harassment, and no role in the foundation's governance. Dana referred her to a specialist who treated the case as more than a public spectacle.
"You could make a fortune on interviews," one producer told Elena.
"I could also make witnesses into entertainment," she answered. "No thanks."
The recovered memory card led financial investigators to the missing scholarship funds. Some had paid debts on Ward property acquisitions; more had disappeared into trusts whose beneficiaries were still being traced. Sofia's missing award was a line in a much larger theft. She stared at the spreadsheet as if anger had acquired a numerical form.
"My mother got fired over twelve thousand dollars," Sofia whispered.
"And they called us thieves," Rosa said.
An independent fund, established by donors no longer willing to use Celia's foundation, began covering emergency scholarships while the courts sorted through restitution. Elena contributed what she could from her personal savings. She was careful not to promise people money she didn't control.
Frank's flash drive finally yielded a readable audio clip. It was recorded inside Marcus's car. At first there was only rain and the soft click of the turn signal. Then Marcus's voice: "Victor, get away from my door."
Another voice, Celia's, came through a speakerphone. "Bring me the files and this ends."
Marcus answered, "You don't get to buy every witness."
The clip ended in brakes and a terrible metallic sound. It did not show who struck whom. It did show Celia giving an order and Victor confronting Marcus. Combined with the physical evidence, it changed the direction of the investigation.
That evening Pierce called with news that made Elena sit down.

"We recovered a longer recording from the drive," she said. "Marcus kept speaking after the crash."
