Chapter 11 - The Cut Wire

The security company found the problem in twenty minutes.
A cable in the basement had been cut cleanly with a blade.
Not chewed by a mouse.
Not loosened accidentally.
Cut.
Fortunately, the cameras had cloud backup.
Jessica did not know that.
The final recording before the feed went dark showed someone descending the basement stairs at 1:06 a.m.
The face was hidden by a hood.
But the person wore white sneakers with a red stripe.
Jessica owned a pair exactly like them.
Evelyn sent the clip to the detective handling the medication report.
By noon, the detective wanted to interview both Jessica and Matthew.
Suddenly Jessica's confidence cracked.
“You're trying to destroy your own son,” she said.
We stood in the kitchen, the same room where she had practiced my signature.
“No. Your choices are doing that.”
“He'll lose his job if this becomes public.”
“Then he should have thought of his job before trying to take my money.”
Matthew entered from the hallway.
“Stop.”
Jessica turned. “Tell her.”
He looked at me.
I waited.
“Mom, please don't give the police the camera footage.”
There it was.
Not “I didn't do it.”
Not “Jessica did it.”
Please don't give them the footage.
“I already did.”
He sat down hard.
Jessica's face went white, then red.
“You stupid old—”
She stopped herself.
I almost smiled.
“Finish the sentence.”
She grabbed her purse and stormed outside.
Matthew remained at the table.
“I never wanted you hurt.”
“You wanted me declared incapable.”
“I thought it was paperwork.”
“You thought my freedom was paperwork?”
He started crying again.
This time it did not move me.
“I need you to answer one question,” I said. “Did you replace my medication?”
His head snapped up. “No.”
“Did Jessica?”
“I don't know.”
“Did you know she had my pills?”
He looked away.
That was answer enough.
“What did you know?”
He whispered, “She said if you seemed tired and confused at the evaluation, it would make everything easier.”
The room went silent.
I could hear the refrigerator humming.
My son knew.
Maybe he had not touched the bottle.
But he knew.
Then he said something that changed the shape of the entire case.
“Mom, Jessica wasn't doing this just for the house.”
I stared at him.
“What else is there?”
He swallowed.
