Chapter 12 - Bank 417

The police called it a missing-child emergency.

Daniel called it an abduction.

Margaret called it confusion.

"Rose has a history of running," she told Detective Morris.

Daniel nearly hit her.

Claire stopped him.

"Don't give her that," she whispered.

For once, Daniel listened.

He picked up the bank key before Morris could.

Margaret saw.

So did Morris.

Daniel closed his fist around it.

"You can have it when I have my lawyer."

"Daniel," Morris warned.

"You knew about it before I told you. I'm done trusting you."

He took Lily and left with Claire in Mr. Hanley's truck.

They drove to Daniel's attorney, Marcus Reed, an old college friend who had never liked Claire's family.

Marcus heard the story without interrupting.

Then he looked at Claire.

"You understand how bad this looks for you?"

"Yes."

"Good. Then don't lie to me even once."

Claire nodded.

The bank on the key tag was a private branch downtown.

Box 417 was registered to Rebecca Bennett under a sealed identity arrangement created ten years earlier.

Getting access took four hours, three affidavits, and one emergency court order.

Inside the box were no jewels.

No cash.

There were eight flash drives, two notebooks, a stack of printed photographs, and a sealed envelope labeled:

DANIEL CARTER - IF CLAIRE FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH.

Daniel looked at his wife.

"Did you know this existed?"

"No."

Marcus set up an offline laptop.

The first drive contained video files.

Most were dated more than a decade ago.

They watched Rebecca, younger than Claire, sitting in what looked like a basement room.

She spoke directly to the camera.

"My parents record everything. They call it protection. It isn't."

The video jumped.

Rebecca was crying now.

"Emma heard them say Claire gave them the motel address. I don't know if Claire understood what she was doing. I want to believe she didn't."

Claire broke down.

Then Rebecca said something that silenced everyone.

"If anything happens to me, find the house at 614 Wren Street. The room under the stairs is not empty."

Daniel stared at Marcus.

May you like

614 Wren Street was his house.
