Chapter 14 - One Hour

Detective Price wanted Daniel nowhere near the exchange.
Daniel refused.
"She asked for me."
"That's exactly why you shouldn't go."
"My sister is there," Claire said.
Price looked at her. "And your mother is betting you'll both act emotionally."
Marcus spread the contents of the bank box across Daniel's dining table.
"We need to know what she wants most."
There were financial records, property transfers, private security invoices, therapy reports, sealed juvenile documents, and dozens of videos.
Then Claire found a notebook page with three names underlined:
EMMA BENNETT.
REBECCA BENNETT.
MARGARET VALE.
Beside Margaret's name Rebecca had written:
THE ORIGINAL ARCHIVE IS NOT WITH ME.
Daniel opened the sealed envelope addressed to him.
Inside was one letter.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, Claire has either chosen the truth or run out of places to hide from it. Do not let Margaret convince you this is about one family. She built a business around control: cameras, private investigators, leverage, recordings. Powerful people paid her to know what happened inside their own homes. Then they paid more to make problems disappear.
The bank box is evidence, but not the archive.
The archive is inside your house.
Daniel read the line twice.
"Inside our house?"
Marcus looked around.
Claire whispered, "The C labels."
"Cameras?"
"No. Compartments."
Daniel remembered C-1, C-2, C-3.
Price's team began searching again.
Twenty minutes later, a technician found a magnetic latch behind Lily's bookshelf.
Inside the wall was a metal case.
C-4.
It contained a hard drive.
Price connected it to an isolated computer.
Thousands of folders appeared.
Names.
Dates.
Addresses.
Video clips.
Audio.
Marcus stared at the screen. "This could bury half a dozen companies. Maybe more."
Claire pointed to one folder.
DANIEL CARTER.
He opened it.
Inside were videos of him at work, at restaurants, driving, talking to friends.
One file was dated six years ago.
Two years before he met Claire.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
May you like
Margaret had been watching him before he ever knew her daughter existed.
