Chapter 19 - The Last Lie

Rachel told me not to meet Daniel alone.

I didn’t want to meet him at all.

But when someone says they have a secret about your child, logic becomes fragile.

Daniel sat behind thick glass in the county interview room.

His face looked smaller somehow.

I picked up the phone.

“You have five minutes.”

He nodded.

“I ordered the mechanic to damage Anna’s brakes.”

My fingers tightened around the receiver.

“I know.”

“I told myself I was only slowing her down. That Marcus would scare her and she’d stop.”

“You told the mechanic to make the brakes fail before the highway.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You killed her.”

“Yes.”

The word was barely audible.

I wanted to smash the glass.

Instead I asked, “What about Lily?”

Daniel looked toward the camera in the corner.

“Anna knew she was being followed. The week before the crash, she changed Lily’s legal trust structure without telling you.”

“So?”

“She made Lily the controlling beneficiary of Hale Construction if you died before Lily turned twenty-five.”

My heartbeat slowed.

“That means Claire wouldn’t gain control through marriage.”

“No. Nobody would. Not directly.”

“Then why change the marital agreement?”

“To create a fake path.”

I stared at him.

Daniel swallowed.

“Marcus wanted you to think Claire could control Lily’s inheritance. He believed fear would make you sign other documents quickly. But the trust change was never valid.”

“So this entire plan…”

“Was partly theater.”

I thought of Lily crying beside the dining table.

Real fear created by adults performing fake power games around her.

Daniel leaned toward the glass.

“There’s more. Anna left a letter for Lily. Not evidence. A real letter. I hid it because it named me.”

“Where?”

“In your house.”

“Where?”

“The place Claire never searched.”

I knew before he said it.

Lily’s room.

That night I removed the bottom panel from her bookshelf.

An envelope slid onto the carpet.

For Lily, when she is old enough to ask why.

My hands shook as I opened it.
