Chapter 9 - The Greenhouse Countdown

The words echoed through the foyer, the hallways, and the dark windows of the manor.

HAWTHORNE TRANSFER WINDOW OPEN.

Richard’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Elena saw it.

He had expected the system to wake.

He had not expected it to speak.

A second message appeared on every screen.

BENEFICIARY: ELENA HAWTHORNE.

TIME REMAINING: 23:59:51.

Thomas stared at the nearest display.

“That interface wasn’t there before.”

Richard looked at him.

“Neither was half the system.”

Claire suddenly drove her cane backward into Richard’s shin.

He shouted and lost his grip.

Ethan ran.

Cole ran with him.

Claire stumbled down the steps as Richard lunged after her.

Cole reached them first.

“Hands!”

Richard stopped.

Then smiled.

A gunshot cracked from inside the house.

The porch light exploded.

Everyone dropped.

Richard rolled behind a stone planter and disappeared through a side door.

Cole fired toward the dark interior but did not pursue.

“Shooter upstairs!”

Thomas dragged Claire behind a column.

She shoved him away.

“Don’t touch me.”

He stared at her as if the sentence hurt more than the punch Ethan had thrown.

Ethan crouched beside his mother.

“Are you hurt?”

Claire touched his face with both hands.

“You got old.”

He laughed and cried in the same breath.

“So did you.”

Elena’s phone vibrated.

A video message.

Mara sat in the back of the medical van.

The nurse was gone.

A man in a black mask stood behind her.

A red digital timer filled the bottom of the screen.

00:29:59.

Richard’s voice spoke off camera.

“Bring the brass key to the greenhouse.”

Elena looked toward the convoy.

The medical van’s rear doors stood open.

The trooper assigned to Mara lay unconscious on the gravel.

Ethan saw the video.

“No.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the key.

“He has my mother.”

“And he wants you to walk into another locked room.”

Claire looked at the screen.

“Greenhouse,” she whispered.

Thomas turned.

“What?”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“The fourth condition isn’t in the clock.”

Everyone looked at her.

“It’s under the greenhouse.”

Thomas swore.

Richard’s message had not asked for Elena’s signature.

It had asked for the key.

He knew the brass key did more than open hidden shelves.

The countdown dropped to 00:28:41.

Elena replayed the video frame by frame.

At first all she saw was Mara, the masked man, and the timer.

Then she noticed the reflection in the van window.

A greenhouse roof.

Not the main greenhouse beside the kitchen.

The abandoned Victorian glasshouse beyond the east garden, where Richard grew white roses no one was allowed to cut.

Ethan saw it too.

“He chose a place tied to the house but outside the fire system.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“He chose it because that greenhouse sits over the original Hawthorne foundation stones.”

Elena looked at her.

“The original house was there?”

“Part of it. Before the 1924 renovation.”

Another piece moved into place.

If the trust required acceptance in the original house, the greenhouse could legally count.

Richard was not improvising.

He had spent decades preparing for this night.

Cole called for the tactical team.

Elena shook her head.

“He’ll hear them.”

“Good.”

“He’ll kill her.”

Cole looked at the video.

“He may kill her anyway.”

Elena hated the sentence because it was true.

Claire reached for the brass key.

Elena pulled back.

“Why does Richard need it?”

Claire looked at Thomas.

“Because Thomas never knew the whole mechanism.”

His jaw tightened.

Claire continued.

“I changed it after his crash.”

“You built the final failsafe?” Elena asked.

“With Mara’s lawyer. I moved the original condition into a sealed trust chamber under the greenhouse. The brass key starts the sequence, but it cannot finish it.”

“What finishes it?”

Claire looked at Elena.

“You.”

The countdown reached 00:27:55.

Elena slipped the key into her pocket.

Ethan stood.

“I’m going with you.”

“No.”

He stared at her.

“Try that again.”

She almost smiled.

“You’re going with me, but not beside me.”

Cole looked between them.

Elena pointed toward the dark eastern garden.

“If Richard expects me to come through the main greenhouse door, we use the tunnel Thomas mentioned.”

Thomas shook his head.

“The tunnel exits inside the lower chamber. If Richard is already there, you’ll emerge in front of him.”

Claire answered before Elena could.

“No. There’s a second exit.”

Thomas turned to her.

She gave him a cold look.

“You weren’t the only person who could keep secrets.”

They split into two teams.

Elena and Cole approached the greenhouse openly.

Ethan and Claire used the second tunnel entrance behind the east wall.

Thomas stayed outside with the tactical unit, furious at being excluded.

The greenhouse glass shone under emergency lights.

Inside, Mara sat tied to a chair beside a stone hatch.

Richard stood behind her with a pistol.

The timer on Elena’s phone read 00:19:08.

“You came,” Richard said.

Elena held up the key.

“Let her go.”

“Open the hatch.”

“Let her go.”

Richard smiled.

“You think this is negotiation?”

Elena took one more step.

“No.”

She looked past him.

At the stone floor.

At the faint line of moisture along one tile.

Then at the security camera above his head.

She understood.

Richard had not kidnapped Mara to make Elena open the chamber.

He had positioned Mara where the camera could see her.

Where Elena’s face would be captured again.

Where the system would record coercion.

Why would he want that?

Unless coercion did not invalidate the transfer.

Unless it activated something else.

Elena lowered the key.

Richard’s smile vanished.

“What are you doing?”

“You don’t want me to open it.”

His eyes sharpened.

“You want the system to watch you force me.”

A soft click came from beneath the floor.

The stone hatch unlocked by itself.

Claire’s voice rose from below.

“Because coercion is the third condition.”

Richard spun.

The hatch opened.

Ethan climbed out first.

And behind him, Claire Hale held the original Hawthorne deed in both hands.
