Chapter 18 - The Last Trap

Marcus had planted a dead-man switch.

If he failed to log into a hidden server every twelve hours, automated scripts began wiping records and triggering forged transfers designed to make Adrian look responsible.

The FBI cybercrime team took over.

Adrian sat in a glass conference room while technicians raced to isolate systems.

"Can you stop it?" he asked.

"We can slow it," the lead analyst said. "But the shutdown key is probably stored offline."

Maria arrived carrying Claire's photograph.

"Look at the back," she said.

Adrian read the message again.

If anything happens, trust Maria.

Below it, in tiny writing neither had noticed, was a string of numbers.

03-11-09-14-05-20.

Grant recognized it as a simple letter substitution.

C K I N E T.

"Does that mean anything?" he asked.

Maria stared at the photo.

"Claire used to call one place 'the cabinet.' She said Marcus kept old contracts in a locked cabinet at the yacht club."

Adrian remembered the Cole family's private boathouse.

Not cabinet.

Cabinet in French: cabinet.

But Claire had once joked about Marcus's "little kingdom" inside the chart room.

They searched it under warrant.

Behind a framed nautical map, investigators found a small metal case containing backup access keys, account ledgers, and the missing flash drive.

The dead-man switch was disabled with nine minutes left.

The financial evidence was devastating.

Marcus had stolen tens of millions over eleven years.

Vanessa had received payments after Claire's death and during her relationship with Adrian.

Several executives had taken bribes.

But one file mattered more than all the rest.

It was titled BALCONY.

Inside was a copied security clip Marcus had downloaded before deleting the mansion original.

The video showed Vanessa lifting Oliver over the railing.

It showed Maria racing below.

It showed Vanessa releasing him.

And, in the background reflection of the glass, it showed Marcus standing inside the security hallway, watching.

Adrian felt sick.

Grant paused the frame.

"This is enough."

Maria shook her head.

"No. Look closer."

In the reflection, Marcus was holding a phone.

On its screen was a video call.

A third person had been watching live.
