Chapter 11 - The Man Who Called It Love

I recognized the way Adrian drew out the last word in a sentence, as if he expected everyone else to catch up. Hearing it through a surveillance microphone made my skin crawl.

He wasn't alone. Another man answered, "The boy isn't part of the deal."

"Neither was my wife," Adrian said. "Deals change."

The tactical team waited until Mateo was clear of the nearest door. Then a loud mechanical crash came through the headphones. Officers announced themselves. A chair scraped. Somebody shouted. The audio dissolved into footsteps, a muffled thud, and static.

"Mateo secured," a voice finally reported. "Suspect fled east."

My knees went weak. I caught the van's doorframe.

They brought Mateo out wrapped in a gray blanket. He had a cut above his eyebrow, but he walked on his own. I told him his mother was alive and looking for him. He stared at me suspiciously before asking, "Why do they want you so bad?"

"Because I have something they can't take back," I said. "A chance to tell the truth."

He considered that, then pulled a small brass key from the lining of his jacket. "Mom said to give this to Claire Mercer, if I ever met her. Not Claire Vale. Mercer."

He'd been carrying it for weeks. Its head was stamped with a tiny crane.

Ruth took a photograph, then returned it to my hand. "Your mother used crane symbols. Maybe it's a locker."

Mateo's eyes widened. "Mom said the lady with the cranes kept a second copy."

At that moment, a police radio crackled. Adrian had escaped through a side exit and stolen a maintenance truck. His last known direction was toward our family estate on North Bluff Road.

Dad stared at the map. "He's going to the one place I never searched."

"Where?" I asked.

He answered, "Your mother's studio."
