Chapter 8 - The Name on the Warrant

"Which man?" I asked.
Static crackled. "The one who signed the warrant."
I glanced at the paperwork Noah had given Ruth. The judicial signature was legitimate; I'd watched him confirm it. But an attached access request bore another signature: Daniel Mercer. My father. Dated three days before he came back into my life.
Lena's breath shook in my ear. "They're not trying to preserve the archive. They want the names before Shaw gets them. Tell Ruth about the blue ledger. She'll understand."
The call cut off.
Ruth took one look at my face and guided me into a separate room. I told her every word. She shut her eyes, not with surprise but with frustration.
"Daniel never told you about the blue ledger?"
"What is it?"
"A handwritten record of who authorized the patient-data sales. Dr. Shaw kept it as insurance. Your father believes it contains the name of the official protecting Adrian. He also believes it proves someone in law enforcement warned Shaw when your mother started asking questions."
"Why not tell me?"
"Because he thinks the truth will destroy what little you have left of him."
In the server room, Noah's technicians uncovered a metal box secured under the lowest shelf. Inside lay a blue notebook, a disposable phone, and a child's drawing of three cranes flying over water. It was mine. I'd drawn it for Mom when she stayed late at the hospital.
On the first page of the notebook was a payment dated the night she died. The recipient was listed only as M.V. A second entry showed the same initials beside a payment made six months after my wedding.
"Margaret Vale," I said.
Noah shook his head. "Possibly. Initials aren't proof."
I turned another page. There was a photograph stapled to the paper: my mother standing beside Margaret in the parking garage, hours before the supposed accident.
