Chapter 15 - The Farmhouse

Police surrounded the Lake Mercer farmhouse before sunset.
This time I stayed away because Dad threatened to lock me in the car himself.
For three hours, nothing happened.
Then a tactical team entered.
The house was empty.
But the basement was not.
They found computers, counterfeit documents, prescription bottles, burner phones, and a wall covered with photographs.
Photographs of me.
Leaving work.
Buying coffee.
Visiting my mother’s grave.
Sleeping beside a pool at a resort in Napa.
Dad had to sit down when he saw that one.
Elliot had been studying me for years.
One whiteboard contained dates.
My wedding.
My fertility appointment.
The staircase fall.
The night Adrian attacked me.
Next to that date was one phrase:
PRESSURE EVENT - V.C. PUSH FINAL SEPARATION.
Vanessa was horrified when detectives showed her.
“He told me Adrian needed a reason to end the marriage,” she said. “I thought the pills were just sedatives. I thought the guardianship file was leverage.”
“You helped him poison me,” I said.
“I know.”
There was nothing useful to add.
Then police found the most important item in the house.
A paper map with a circle around Hawthorne Group’s annual foundation gala, scheduled for the next night.
Dad immediately canceled the event.
I told him not to.
He stared at me. “Absolutely not.”
“Elliot wants us scared and reacting. If we cancel, he disappears.”
“If we don’t, he may come.”
“Exactly.”
“You are not bait.”
“I’m already bait. I’ve been bait for years without knowing it.”
Miriam hated the idea too, but the detective admitted a controlled event might draw Elliot out if he believed the succession documents would be present.
So we changed the plan.
The gala would continue with fewer guests, undercover officers, hidden security, and a fake set of trust documents in Dad’s office upstairs.
At 9:42 p.m. the next night, I stood beneath the ballroom lights wearing a black dress that covered most of my bruises.
Adrian’s arrest was already public. Reporters crowded outside.
Vanessa was cooperating with prosecutors under guard.
Dad stayed ten feet from me all night.
At 10:17, the fire alarm went off.
Guests began moving toward the exits.
Dad grabbed my arm.
Then every light in the ballroom died.

In the darkness, someone whispered beside my ear.
“Your mother screamed your father’s name before the car went over.”
