Chapter 8 - The House That Lied

Darkness erased the basement.
Rose screamed upstairs.
Evelyn spun toward the sound and struck the corner of the server rack with her hip.
Alexander caught her before she fell.
"Stay down."
"The children."
"Voss is on the call."
The laptop screen had gone black with the power.
Alexander pulled out his phone.
No signal.
The basement walls were stone.
The house had become a sealed box.
A faint scraping came from the stairwell.
Alexander moved toward it.
Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.
"Don't disappear into the dark again."
His hand closed over hers once.
Then he whispered, "Count with me."
They listened.
One second.
Two.
Three.
At seventeen, a thin emergency light flickered on above the wine cellar door.
Not the house system.
Battery backup.
In the weak red glow, they saw Daniel standing on the stairs.
"Rose screamed," he said.
"Go back up," Evelyn ordered.
"The door won't open."
Alexander climbed to him.
The basement door had been locked from the other side.
Then a smell entered through the heating vent.
Bitter.
Chemical.
Alexander's face changed.
"Get low."
Evelyn's pulse exploded.
"What is it?"
"I don't know."
That answer frightened her more.
Alexander pulled Daniel's shirt over the boy's nose and led them into the wine cellar, where an old exterior coal chute had been sealed with plywood.
He kicked through it on the third strike.
Snow poured inside.
Cold air followed.
They crawled out behind the west terrace.
Two police cruisers sat in the drive.
Both officers were unconscious inside their vehicles.
Alive.
Breathing.
Drugged.
Evelyn ran toward the manor.
Alexander caught her around the waist.
"Rose is inside!"
"So is whoever did this."
"Then let me go."
He did.
They entered through the kitchen door.
Mrs. Bell was on the floor beside the pantry, conscious but disoriented.
"Rose," she whispered. "He took Rose toward the chapel passage."
Alexander stopped.
"What chapel passage?"
Mrs. Bell blinked at him.
"Your mother sealed it after the flood. Behind the winter pantry."
Another hidden corridor.
Another part of the house Nathan knew better than they did.
Evelyn found the panel behind a row of old preserving shelves.
Fresh scrape marks showed where it had been opened.
The passage beyond sloped downhill beneath the snow-covered grounds.
Alexander took a flashlight from the kitchen emergency drawer.
Daniel tried to follow.
"No."
"That's my sister."
"And you're staying with Mrs. Bell."
"Nathan is my—"
The word caught in Daniel's throat.
Alexander turned back.
"Nathan's biology does not give him authority over you."
Daniel's chin shook.
"Then bring Rose back."
Alexander nodded once.
"I will."
He and Evelyn entered the passage.
The tunnel smelled of wet stone and rust.
Halfway through, they found Rose's red hair ribbon on the ground.
Evelyn picked it up.
Her fingers trembled so badly Alexander had to take the flashlight.
"She's leaving a trail," he said.
"She's five."
"She's Clara's daughter."
The words steadied Evelyn more than reassurance would have.
At the far end, stone steps rose beneath Hawthorne Chapel.
The small Gothic chapel stood beyond the frozen gardens, unused since Clara's memorial service.
Alexander pushed open the trapdoor beneath the sacristy.
No one was there.
But Rose's second ribbon lay on the floor.
The chapel doors were open to the snow.
Footprints led toward the old family crypt.
Evelyn ran.
The crypt door stood ajar.
Inside, the air smelled of earth and extinguished candles.
"Rose?"
A small voice answered from behind a stone bench.
"Aunt Evelyn?"
Evelyn found her crouched there, wrapped in a man's wool coat.
She was crying but unhurt.
Evelyn crushed the girl against her chest.
"Who brought you here?"
Rose pointed toward the back wall.
"The man with the cut face."
Gordon Pike.
"Where did he go?"
"He said to tell Dad he was sorry."
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"Dad?"
Rose nodded toward him.
"You."
She pulled something from beneath the coat.
A flash drive.
"He said this is why the bad uncle is going to kill him."
Alexander took it.
On the metal casing someone had scratched one word.
CLARA.
Detective Voss reached the chapel ten minutes later with paramedics and a second unit.
The first two officers had been sedated with aerosolized midazolam delivered through cracked cruiser windows.
Mrs. Bell had been exposed to the same chemical through the pantry vent.
Pike had known exactly how long everyone would be impaired.
"Why would he give Rose the drive?" Voss asked.
"Because he's scared of Nathan," Alexander said.
"Or because it's bait."
They opened the drive on an isolated police laptop.
It contained one folder.
CLARA WARD.
Inside were scans from the Swiss clinic.
Medication logs.
Restraint orders.
Private payment records.
And a video dated four months after Clara's funeral.
Clara sat in a white hospital room.
Dr. Vale stood beside her.
Nathan was visible in the mirror.
Clara looked directly into the camera.
"You want me to say I'm confused," she said. "I'm not. You want me to say Daniel belongs with you. He doesn't. You changed the fertility sample. You used your own genetic material without my consent. Alexander is Daniel's father in every way that matters."
Evelyn covered Rose's ears.
The video continued.
Nathan stepped into frame.
"Sign the statement."
"No."
"Then you stay here."
Clara laughed once.
It was broken and furious.
"You can't keep burying people while they're alive."
Nathan leaned close to her.
"I only need to keep them buried long enough."
The video ended.
A second file opened automatically.
Not video.
A scanned map of the Hawthorne estate.
A red circle had been drawn beneath the family chapel.
Voss looked down.
"We're already here."
Alexander took the flashlight and moved toward the crypt's rear wall.
One stone bore fresh scratches.
Behind it was a narrow metal door.
The key was still in the lock.
Alexander opened it.
Inside lay stacks of medical supply boxes, old passports, burner phones, and a black leather case stamped with Dr. Vale's initials.
Evelyn opened the case.
On top was a Swiss clinic intake form.
Patient name: CLAIRE WARD.
Below it was another.
Patient name: ELIAS WARD.
And beneath both sat a third blank form.

Only one field had been completed.
PATIENT NAME: EVELYN WARD.
