Chapter 16 - The Boxes Come BackI called Lucía instead of driving toward Javier. She asked me to share exactly what he'd said and advised me not to enter a potentially unsafe situation. I also reported the threatening messages and new information to the authorities handling the complaint.

For twelve hours, Javier didn't answer. I paced my hotel room while Inés updated me about work. At noon, a courier delivered a large cardboard box to Lucía's office. Inside were my father's letters, original contracts, and a smaller envelope bearing Javier's handwriting.
I couldn't make myself destroy these. I'm sorry.
No promises. No explanation. Just that.
I opened Dad's letters one by one. Some were missing; most were there. Tucked inside the oldest envelope was a photograph of me at twenty-four, standing in a bare studio beside a homemade sign. On the back Dad had written: She built the thing she was afraid to start.
I cried then, hard enough that Inés closed the office door and sat beside me without speaking.
Javier surfaced that evening with his own lawyer. He hadn't been abducted or attacked. Sergio had confronted him at his office and threatened financial consequences if he cooperated. Javier had walked out and switched off his phone. He'd let me imagine the worst.
“I'm willing to make a statement,” he told Lucía. “But I want protection from the debts.”
Lucía replied, “You need independent legal advice about your position. Cooperating doesn't mean you can negotiate away the facts.”
He looked at me across the conference table. “I never wanted you hurt.”
“You humiliated me because I wouldn't hand over my money.”
“I know.”
“You let your mother blame me.”
“I know.”
“And when you saw she planned to destroy my father's letters, you waited until you were scared of Sergio to return them.”
He had no answer.
Before leaving, Javier pushed a USB drive toward his lawyer. “These are copies of the conversations and financing files I still have.”
A few hours later, after initial review, Lucía called me.
“The drive contains a draft for another transfer,” she said. “This time the money wasn't going to Sergio.”
“Where was it going?”
“To an account Mercedes opened under a different name.”
